It's like AEW is trying to have it both ways, though. "Unsanctioned matches" are a concept that people in this thread are dismissing as "relics from the '80s." If AEW doesn't want to be a throwback territory-days promotion, then don't push sh*t like "unsanctioned matches." Who here said those matches are 80's relics? Like AEW has done these from the beginning and they've been widely accepted. This is literally a non issue, and it was a great way for Cole to lose nothing and Cassidy to regain a lot of steam Just like my opinion isn't necessarily fact, your declaring this a "non-issue" doesn't automatically make it so.

I think people are focusing too much on the rankings and less on the sheer perception of a loss. Cole with a loss, even one that doesn't "count," is a little less special than he was before. To you. Not to everyone. Everyone has to lost, or the thought of being undefeated becomes less special. Cole lost a super hardcore match via going through a stage, if that weakens his perception in the company, then I'm sorry, I just find that ridiculous and an obscenely high standard where they can't win.

They subtly mentioned he’s the number one ranked contender too. He’s definitely next up after Hangman beats Archer. Yeah, I get all that. I just think then they better have something super important for OC too to just give away Cole’s first pinfall like that. He kicked out of the orange punch, the beach break, the Panama sunrise, and had to be literally thrown off a cliff to be pinned, I don’t think it hurt him too badly. This has been the problem with Orange’s booking, generally, though. He’s a clear main event player, but he’s kind of directionless so he ends up playing JTTS for extended periods of time before getting big wins. Nothing ever really came of his win in the Mimosa Mayhem or the Arcade Anarchy either, in terms of him changing his position on the card. But, he’s clearly not someone you ever want to face in a gimmick match.

Not taking away from the performance and it’s a nit in the moment.

I see zero reason to have issues with Cole losing since the Elite's been consistently kicking OC's ass for on and off about eight solid months at this point and the dude was very overdue for a strong win plus I would argue Cole doesn't really feel especially special or protected to begin with.

Cassidy I feel will eventually win a title in the future, and when he does it'll be massive, but these matches show he's no pushover, he just knows how to get it done when it's the climax of a big match

AEW fans are not dumb. They know that if someone loses a match, they doesn’t mean they think he sucks for losing. Adam Cole isn’t going to be less over if he lost. And let’s give OC credit, he most definitely is one of the most over and dare I say biggest “homegrown” stars in AEW. Losing to him doesn’t hurt anyone. Adam Cole is perfectly fine.

Fair enough, but it just doesn't make sense to have issue with a guy who has taken the brunt of this feud, getting one over in a match where Cole literally had to be thrown off a cliff to lose that doesn't even put a 1 in his loss column. Like Cole's in the same position he was coming in as going out, number one in the rankings, and one of the best wrestlers they have. Doesn't hurt anything to lose to Cassidy in this way.

We as wrestling fans REALLY need to figure out what the actual f*** we want promotions to do here, because it’s just mixed messages to me. Like, everyone hates dirty finishes as generally done by WWE. That’s fine. But the only alternatives from there are clean finishes or draws. I can’t imagine people would be too chuffed with wrestling that ends with no winner every single time, so that leaves only clean finishes. And THAT is slowly turning into “I want clean finishes, but only if my favourite person wins/someone I hate loses”. We’re not ever gonna get a full roster of talents in any promotion all simultaneously on Goldberg streaks. Sorry. Somebody’s gotta lose sometimes.

We’re not ever gonna get a full roster of talents all simultaneously on Goldberg streaks. Sorry. Somebody’s gotta lose sometimes. I've actually gotten into it with people on here because I'm an advocate of more disqualifications in AEW. I know I'm on an island here, but there have to be rules and for there to be rules, there have to be consequences for breaking them. Not all DQ finishes are "bad," and not all pinfall finishes are "good." A good DQ will have you salivating to see a rematch, and AEW is generally pretty good at giving you one with a decisive finish rather than forgetting about it, or booking a big match with no possible ending and copping out. And my skepticism of OC going over Cole is less about this result in and of itself and more about that OC-Hardy match that just gets stupider and stupider the farther we get from it.

And we’re really glossing over the fact that Cole had to literal the murdered to take this loss, too. I wouldn’t exactly say this constitutes a clean L.
