Been replaying it for the first time in a few years - not sure exactly how long it's been, since I know I did a good bit of a run on my PS3 but forget how far I actually got while before that I last played it on the 360 which I last really played before I got a PS4 in 2016 - and coming up on the end of the game so felt like a good time to talk about it.
Think it's probably the best game pound for pound Rockstar ever made, though there are certainly problems with it. The mechanics can be a bit wonky and I do think the game kind of peaks early, with a lot of the high points being during the New Austin arc while the Mexico one really dips in quality and the West Elizabeth one is a bit too short and is bogged down a bit by the stuff with MacDougal. It's also kind of interesting to revisit it in light of playing 2 since while the broad strokes match up they do seem to have retconned a lot of the specifics of the backstory, kind of gives it this, "Close but not quite right," feeling playing it now. Kind of the peril of doing prequels I suppose. Either way though still love it and it's very easy to get into a rhythm with it.
Wish I'd played it when it first came out. Was pretty dismissive of the premise and setting on paper so I didn't touch it until years after its initial release despite my brother having it; when I did finally try it out though I really enjoyed it and I've probably fully played through it three or four times now.
Kind of unsure what I want to do next. Been on a little bit of a Rockstar kick but feeling pretty split on after I finish it if I want to do Undead Nightmare, RDR2, Bully, or Lost & Damned next. I think I'm leaning either RDR2 or Bully but I was already a good ways through L&D as it was so it'd probably be the quickest to wrap up.

I'm replaying it properly for the first time in years, too, and I'm a half-dozen missions into the Mexico chapter. I absolutely adore the setting and probably prefer it to RDR2. As pretty as the lush forests and snowy mountains are, there's just something about the brutally dry, dusty New Austin and Nuevo Paradiso landscapes that appeal to me.

Oh, I 100% prefer it over the sequel. I do need to play the sequel again because my opinions on it are pretty mixed - my primary instinct when thinking about it is to snap to how much a lot of the mechanics annoy me but when I think about it more there is a loooot of stuff I really look back on fondly with it - but it's not even a contest for me. Granted I technically didn't even actually finish the sequel. Decided to take a break when I hit the epilogue and then never touched it again.

Granted I technically didn't even actually finish the sequel. Decided to take a break when I hit the epilogue and then never touched it again. I do find myself missing a lot of the more immersive activities from RDR2, like being able to steal and sell horses and needing to eat and sleep, but I definitely prefer the narrative of the first game and just how tight it is. As large as the RDR2 map is, I can't quite get myself immersed in the gang being on the run from the Pinkertons when they're never more than a day's ride from anywhere. Any half-awake law enforcement agency would track them down in a matter of hours. In RDR you generally know where Bill, Javier, and Dutch are and it's always a case of overcoming the obstacles that are put in your way. I definitely recommend going back and finishing the epilogue. That is one way in which RDR2 surpasses the first game. Marston is much closer to the Marston in RDR and a lot more likeable than adult Jack.

I used to play this to death but haven't gone back to it since 2 came out. Might have to revisit but I'm worried it won't have aged well.

RDR is the first game I've ever played where I felt emotional at certain points. I'll never forget how it made me feel when I got into Mexico and that song played. And in each subsequent play through, I always feel a twinge of sadness at the end of the New Austin chapter, and the end of the Mexico chapter, as I knew I was being drawn inevitably towards the end of the campaign. I know I'm not the only player that avoids going to the ranch after you kill Dutch.
I just don't want the campaign to end, I don't want to experience that end I know is coming.

Side note, on my current playthrough I got to that point and just as the first couple of seconds of the song started I got off my horse to loot the two guys who you kill as the raft is coming to shore. I totally forgot the song cuts off the moment you get off your horse, but I didn't want to go back and redo the river crossing mission. Also, "You're an angry and feck-ugly man, but not a bad one" is a great line.

I definitely prefer the first one. All during the second one I was thinking about the end of the first one and kind of thinking about how everything I was doing was pointless. Also zombies, and this...
He did a bloody good one for RDR2 as well.

Just had the fun of having John's death scene undermined by a second Jack that was only moving his head spawning behind everyone so that was a thing. Though honestly what a glitch-addled mess this game is is kind of part of its charm.

I think RDR2 might just be the best game I’ve ever played but I was surprised how well the first one held up on a replay. Going into Mexico is such a great moment.

Aren't they remastering it for the Series X/PS5? I'm interested in seeing what it looks like with the current gen, if true.

Played it for the first time autumn just gone and while it's a great game, West Elizabeth is a buggy mess of a town.

Yeah.... I completely forgot about the GTA travesty (already).... The only way I'm accepting a new RDR release is if the do a full remake it in the RDR2 engine.

Funny thing is that's probably what'd make me pass on it. I have mixed opinions on 2 but I don't think anything about 1 would be improved by being more like it.

I mean more in the sense of keeping the game exactly the same but using the graphical boons the more advanced engine allows, coding from the ground up to avoid the kind of result we got with the GTA remasters.

One thing I had forgotten about that bugs this piss out of me is the number of missions you have where you have to ride from one end of the map to the other and back.
