I'd say he's a decent junk food director who thinks he's a generational talent at both that and being a writer. If he just pointed a camera at other people's scripts and churned out brainless action movies he'd probably be fine but he's insistent on trying to do high art and he's awful at it. I still maintain his best movie is Dawn of the Dead because it jettisons all the stuff from the original he simply cannot understand – the social commentary and satire – and instead plays to his strengths as a director. Also it was written by James Gunn, which definitely helped.

eh, i'm still holding out until we get the black & white version of the director's cut: "Rebel Moon - Chapter One: Chalice of Blood - Grey Rains of Sorrow"
that's the true true version of the movie

Vengance and Boobs" black and white super slow motion directors super cut that ties in every other universe the director has had a hand in. that's the true and final edition of the film... well until he decides that he needs to do reshoots to add more to it as something else came out that he can rip off.

I just realized Rebel Moon titles sound like Castlevania games on the DS.

I had no idea that Gunn was the writer on that. Explains a lot. Unless you're a Snyder fan, in which there's a 99% chance you've publicly stated that Snyder made a great movie from a garbage screenplay.

I’ll go even further and say his peak as a filmmaker and storyteller was the first ten minutes of Dawn. It’s all downhill from there. But for ten minutes he looked every bit the part of a gifted, exciting, fresh director. He was not. Gunn wrote the script so he’s more to blame/thank for it having no resemblance to anything Romero did. forget the absence of social commentary (or that NOW would be the time to set a zombie movie at a mall for the exact opposite reasons it worked in 1978…they made it when it made literally the least sense possible)…the f***ing zombies run. In a remake of a Romero masterpiece. Sacrilege. and I like the movie. I just hate they called it Dawn of the dead.

One of Gunn's early drafts floated around the Internet back in the mid-'00s and can probably be tracked down easily enough today, and it contained a decent amount of social commentary, albeit somewhat on-the-nose. Gunn himself has said in the past it jarred with the tone of the movie, as he was still cutting his teeth as a movie screenwriter, and thus switched to a more action-orientated story. Still, it was the ideal project for Snyder.
