This is not something we usually see in wrestling. More of a 'real sport' situation, and even then likely quite rare to be that underage and have a signed deal already. Good for him.

He was fantastic tonight, he's got a really bright future and that's why they scooped him up on a minor league deal two years ago
He's still young, he's still got plenty to learn, but that was the start of something great I think

They need Jordan Oliver to go with him. I haven’t seen Jordan Oliver since Injustice. Has he gotten better? Because the way he wrestled then looked awkward and I just couldn’t take him seriously.

There's been a lot of growth in Jordan Oliver since the MLW days. Literally so, since he bulked up a couple years ago, alongside from the standard aging of someone going from early to mid 20s.

Anyone a little puzzled why they built him with video packages and main eventing the show and had him lose his debut?

Anyone a little puzzled why they built him with video packages and main eventing the show and had him lose his debut? Not really. Tony isn’t a good Booker. He has great talent that deliver great matches and then gets credit for booking it. Making stars, increasing ratings, telling interesting stories? Not so much.

Nah, there's a better story to be told with Nick Wayne building to his first win than there is with him beating someone like Swerve out of the gate. He's a prospect for a few years time, not for now. Putting on a good show and losing was the right decision, IMO.

Counterpoint would be that you didn’t have to book him against Swerve. Meltzer was harping on this a bit on WOR and on Twitter, but if you want to debut him as a big deal (rather quickly), you would want to give him a big win on his first night after all the hype. If the plan is for him to be Darby’s young boy essentially then I guess it makes more sense.

I've been telling people for a week "this kid is essentially the Victor Wembenyama of professional wrestling" so, to me, (in kayfabe) him losing to Swerve is Victor's summer league debut...where he went 2-13 shooting and finished with 9 point/8 rebounds/5 blocked shots/3 assists. People started shitting on his hype blah blah blah.
his next game 2 days later?
9-14 shooting 27 points 12 rebounds 3 blocks 1 assist.
Point is...at least in Kayfabe...Nick was getting his legs under him, his cockiness cost him and Swerve got him. In a non-kayfabe sense Nick Wayne is too f***ing good for a loss in his first match to hurt him among the in the know fans and the more matches he has the fans who don't know, who he's a new thing to, will end up forgetting he lost his first match.

Please go to college kid. At least find something to study or pick up as a back up plan just in case.

He's only 18 years old, so I'm not sure that they actually are trying to give him the Alberto Del Rio big deal, fairly quick treatment. I think they wanted to hammer home that he's a wrestling prodigy, and establish a reason why he was main eventing Dynamite from the jump, so they gave him the video package and built him up. Then he had a long, competitive, showcase match against a dangerous and established upper card opponent, but just couldn't quite squeak out the victory. I thought it was pretty decent booking, myself, because it immediately established Nick Wayne as a credible wrestler and also gave Swerve a much needed singles W in a big match.

Swerve and Darby are both people on the AEW roster that Nick has not only already worked with extensively, but he goes back a long time with them personally. For your first ever match on national TV, especially for someone who is only 18 years old, that familiarity helps a lot.
The result of the match was quite frankly irrelevant. His dance partner knowing how to make him look like a million bucks and calm nerves in the ring mattered so much more than that.

Yeah that’s fair if they’re going to slowly bring him along like Hook for a few years. It just seemed with the hype videos and going on last that they might have had some idea of pushing him as a main player right away. I’m not totally familiar with his work so not sure if he’s fully ready for that position yet.

He's 18 years old, making his natural TV debut; put him against Swerve, and Swerve can protect him, walk him through the nerves.

I’m not trying to be mean. But man, he’s gonna have a tough go standing out. There’s like 5 nick Wayne’s on this roster, lmaooo. Young (ok, not this young usually, lol), fun worker, good looking, has something resembling ring charisma, but that just doesn’t mean much when you’re in the ocean of talent.
Not even being funny, best thing that could happen to him is a long losing streak where he keeps falling short before MJF or somebody picks on him for an easy dub and gets upset. At least that’s SOMETHING audiences can latch onto beyond White Meat Babyface #48
