The first decade of The Simpsons is filled with so many banger episodes.
It was effortless.

‘Uh-oh. I don’t understand a word he’s saying. Why won’t he just let me bat? I wish I was at home with a big bag of potato chips. Mmmm...potato chips.’ Haven’t seen the episode in years, but I can remember that line. Brilliant song over the end credits too. "Talkin' Softball" sung by Terry Cashman. A take on "Talkin' Baseball". It's funny because when I first heard the latter in the "Gang Beats Boggs" episode of It's Always Sunny, I thought it was sung by Randy Newman. Thanks for that; as a Brit I’d not heard the original so didn’t know if it was just written for that episode or not.

Homer: You're Darryl Strawberry? Darryl: Yes. Homer: You play right field? Darryl: Yes. Homer: I play right field too, so, are you better than me? Darryl: Well, I've never met you, but yes.

I like how they unlikely Jose Canseco “tragedy” that kept him from the game was being helpful to someone.

I like how they unlikely Jose Canseco “tragedy” that kept him from the game was being helpful to someone. The original plan was for him to miss the game due to waking up in bed with Ms. Krabappel. He (and his wife) apparently complained a lot about this and the writers changed it into him basically being a superhero to shut him up. I've always said the final scene in the final episode of The Simpsons (which, at this rate, should air sometime in the 27th century) should be Ozzie Smith clawing his way out of the Springfield Mystery Spot.

Now that you mentioned it, that sounds vaguely familiar. They did the same for Carson. They wrote a script where Carson is retired and stays with the Simpsons and won’t leave. This offended Carson, so Reiss and Jean said “We know him. Go the opposite way. Make him the greatest entertainer ever”. Johnny accepted that one.

Interestingly, I think Terry Cashman said that has more people talk to him about the Simpsons one than the original.

I told you to trim those sideburns! Still better than Steinbrenner… Funnily enough, the production of the episode apparently pre-dated a legitimate incident that Don Mattingly had with George Steinbrenner about his haircut that led to him being benched from the Yankees briefly.

I sure hope that when FXX or Freeform shows this, they don’t mute the song and crunch the credits.
