I heard Bad to the Bone so much in old tv shows that I thought it was somehow even older, not a recent song at the time. I thought it was from the era of “born to be wild” since that was the other song used at the time. Ditto for “sharp dressed man”.
Even recently, I was shocked to find that Particle man was from the 90s, considering I first heard it in Tiny toons and they were usually using music from the 60’s. Even music like “I wanna be rich” get pretty dated to my 10 year old ears even though I recognized it as an 80’s song.

I was floored to find out Story of a Girl was from 2000... I could have sworn it was easily 3 or 4 years older.

First heard this on a CD compilation with music from Curtis Mayfield, Betty Davis, Funkadelic, and Aaron Neville, so I assumed it was from around the same time period... it's from a 2009 album.

New York New York sounded like a 40s/50s tune when I heard it in movies and tv shows,,it's actually from 1977.

O Fortuna.... I assumed it was a song that had been around forever...it was written in like 1936... it's STILL under copyright...
(One of the reasons Roman Reigns uses a Jimmy Hart version of it I'm sure >_>)

In the 80's AC/DC songs all sounded 20 years old.

Start Me Up - The Rolling Stones
Thought it was one of their many hits from the 60’s or 70’s.. it’s from 1981.. it’s an 80’s hit!

I thought A Thing Called Love by the Darkness was from the late 80's/early 90's, but nope that came out in 2003.

Mambo No. 5, I thought it was made in 1930s or 1940s.

Maybe because most of his discography I knew was from the 60s but I thought You Got It by Roy Orbison was released earlier than 1989

Wheatus "Teenage Dirtbag" was the ultimate 1995 Alt Rock song... released in 2000?!

When I found out it was from the early 80s, I was genuinely shocked, because it does NOT sound 80s in any capacity. I assumed it was made in the mid-to-late 60s.

"Friday I'm in Love" came out in 1992. That's AFTER "Smells Like Teen Spirit."

Not me per se, but my sister absolutely refused to believe that Crazy Little Thing Called Love was a song by Queen when I told her.

For me, it's specifically because of being the car's self-playing theme in the movie "Christine". Made and set in the 80's, features a car built over 20 years earlier story-line wise- that was also full on sentient from get-go. I would assume she would pick a theme from her time, not from 20 years down the road?

The fact that my dad (who pretty much listened exclusively to 50s/60s oldies) knew that song confused me as well. And on that note, a lot of Billy Joel songs sounded like they came from the 50s/60s too like The Longest Time and Uptown Girl. Since BJ was still popular when I first heard them, I knew they were 80s songs, but they still sounded like they came from another time. Finally, I thought Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You was a cover song at first, but that's due to the fact that most modern Christmas songs havent really become as iconic as that one.

Billie Joel is another good example - The Longest Time sounds like it could've come out 20 years prior, easily.

The Longest Time and Uptown girl were from An Innocent Man, which was a Concept album of 50's and 60's inspired music.
