After all these years why does WWE still think a submission is more devastating on top of a car or a table or something? Even just doing that one time feels impossibly stupid, much less how weirdly consistent it is. And like every example I can think of involves women just to make it even more odd.

They get obsessive about bizarre things. Like that PPV where a lot of the matches ended with “super” versions of finishers from the second rope. Or how every match has to have an apron spot now and Cole can scream “hardest part of the ring!!!”

What about when they awkwardly work a foreign object into the submission? Sometimes it looks deadly, but sometimes it looks like somebody just has their arm in the gap of a chair and there is zero damage happening. I sometimes love bullshit wrestling logic like that... like when they want to hurt somebody so they clear off the announcers table before slamming somebody on it.

I always went with it because of the showmanship. Yeah, it can be contrived at times, but it can become an iconic image too.

Extra leverage or something. It was badass when Jericho and Benoit did it on the ladder.

The best thing like this which even though isn't a submission but still just awkwardly using a weapon for no reason... Sheamus doing the Irish Curse on the steel steps! the move where Sheamus drops them onto his knee... so the opponent doesn't come anywhere near the object...

Not a submission, but a lot of people are going to think of this so I want to be the first to bring it up: The gold standard of this is Sheamus doing the Irish Curse on the stairs.
He didn't slam them on their stairs. He did it on his knee. They just happened to be standing on the stairs. Announcers still acted like it made it worse.

The Walls of Jericho on the ladder is contrived and just looks ridiculous. Why would he just let go of Jericho's legs?

The sort-of Banks Statement Sasha used with Charlotte wrapped around the handrail in the stands is another great exception to the rule.

Well, it kinda, sorta is slightly worse, in a way, because the stairs are stiffer than the ring, so it actually is a somewhat harder hit.

Never forget. Most painful PTOs EVER.

yes the even more devastating PTO ON THE ANNOUNCE TABLE! where the person in the move has no contact with the table whatsoever and it's as clear as day there is literally nothing different to the move except the location to everyone except michael cole.

Even something as simple as a St. Andrew's Cross will provide you a lot of enriching changes of pace that--oh. Oh different kind of submission, okay.
