Like a thing that could’ve derailed or stalled someone’s career, but the upward momentum was so strong it was almost unnoticeable.
What made me think of this was remembering Adam Sandler and Chris Farley both actually got fired from SNL. Yet, they transitioned to movies so naturally you’d think they just decided to do movies and leave SNL.

I always found it amazing that, in the same calendar year, AC/DC would lose their frontman to a tragic OD death, then just months later release Back In Black with their replacement singer and the album would be so damn good.

It’s crazy how good of a replacement Brian Johnson was for AC/DC. Usually if a lead singer dies it’s either the end of the band or the sound going forward is noticeably different like with Van Halen. Yet, with AC/DC, Bon Scott died and they kept rocking out. I work with a lot of older people and I’ve talked to people who have been fans since the 1980s and they had no idea Brian Johnson wasn’t the original singer. Kind of sad for Bon Scott, but that’s a different story.

George Michael could've very easily been derailed by the public toilet scandal. Instead he parodied it for his video "Outside" and scored one of his biggest hits for years.

In 2006 JAY-Z was the President of Def Jam for a year and it was absolutely disastrous.

SNL needed him to leave or he'd subsume the show

Sandler and Farley were indeed part of the 94-95 season of SNL that almost got the show cancelled. I'm now wondering if that speedbump would be more noticeable if SNL did end around then.

Metallica:
-People thought it was over when Cliff died.
-People thought it was over when they started getting played on MTV.
-People thought it was over when they put out Load.
-People thought it was over when they sued Napster.
-People thought it was over when Jason quit and James went to rehab.
-People thought it was over when they put out St. Anger.
-By the time Lulu came out everyone just laughed about it, because even though it sucked there is no stopping Metallica.

George Michael could've very easily been derailed by the public toilet scandal. Instead he parodied it for his video "Outside" and scored one of his biggest hits for years. It wasn’t actually his biggest hits for years. His singles released from Older over the previous two years reached 1, 1, 2, 3, 2 and 2 on the charts so he was actually at the highest point of his career in terms of chart success. But I agree, turning the arrest into a great track like Outside and naming his Greatest Hits compilation “Ladies and Gentlemen” was a very smart move and the whole incident led to one of his happiest periods as he used it come out and he was relieved of the burden of having to play the game with the media over him having to “hide it”. He knew that his fan base would stand by him regardless (because we always did) but he gained a lot of new fans for his whole “ah f*** it. I’m going to take the piss out of it” attitude and Ladies and Gentlemen sold by the shedload. On a similar note, I’d say Hugh Grant’s reaction to the Divine Brown incident saved his career. He didn’t try and make excuses, he didn’t try and put a spin on it, he just went on one of the biggest shows on TV, held his hands up and admitted he’d been a bloody idiot. Though he did take a couple of years off from making films not long after it, no one really cared when he came back with Notting Hill.

In 2006 JAY-Z was the President of Def Jam for a year and it was absolutely disastrous. All I remember about this time was him signing the Roots to Def Jam, so he gets a pass in my book. Will Smith had to file for bankruptcy pretty early on after he was a successful rapper, he bounced back pretty nicely by being one of the most successful actors of all time (and managed to eek out a few more hit albums)

Would Rob Lowe and his sex tape count? Wasn’t the girl underage too? Never gets talked about nowadays.

I get it, but in retrospect the idea that getting play on what at the time was THE way the majority of people saw music videos would hurt their career is wild to me

I got into AC/DC in my teens (I'm 40 now) and honestly, the Bon Scott stuff blows the Brian Johnson stuff out of the water in some cases. You can't call yourself a real AC/DC fan and not know who Bon Scott is.

You can't call yourself a real AC/DC fan and not know who Bon Scott is. Like I said, in that particular case it’s older people. Folks who have never/almost never been online and know the music from the radio. I’m no spring chicken myself, but I try not to play “real AC/DC fan” card or the “real *insert whatever* fan” card. It’s easy for playing that card to turn into a dick measuring contest. That way you avoid getting into inane arguments that end with lines like, “What? You didn’t know that Brian Johnson’s second cousin, once removed was a vegan? You’re not a real fan!” I prefer just to take pleasure in having a common fandom with someone rather than judging how much of a fan they are.

Two really terrible ones Matthew Broderick drunk driving and killing a mother and daughter. Also Josh Brolin and his domestic violence arrest against Diane Lane

Would Rob Lowe and his sex tape count? Wasn’t the girl underage too? Never gets talked about nowadays. The director of Wayne’s World did interviews recently for the 30th anniversary and mentioned the studio was VERY hesitant to hire Rob Lowe because the scandal was still fresh in peoples minds. It didn’t completely derail his career, but it absolutely held him back from being as big a star as he could’ve been.
