We all know the story of Stella Liebeck and the spilled hot coffee. It all began in February of 1992 when after she spilled hot coffee on herself she suffered severe burns and needed surgery. She wanted McDonalds to pay her medical expenses but they only offered her a couple hundred dollars. Frustrated she filed a lawsuit and for the next two years tried to reach a settlement with McDonalds however that failed. In August of 1994 the case went to trial and Stella won. It is amazing to think years later that at the time this was happening Stella was viewed as the villain thanks to the media turning this into another frivolous lawsuit when she had every right to be angry.

Yep. McDonalds kept their coffee at dangerous temperatures to keep it fresher longer. Also they had a problem with lids not fitting securely that they ignored because money. So this woman suffered third degree burns so the worlds biggest restaurant could save a few measly bucks.
Thats why the judgement needed to be so high. So the giant corporation could actually feel it.
