variety.com/2022/tv/news/toonami-flcl-housing-complex-c-1235207955/FLCL: Grunge and FLCL: Shoegaze. I thought both Progressive and Alternative were pretty solid but they both have some serious problems, especially Alternative just kind of shrugging and giving up at the end. Hopefully these ones stick the landing better.... and don't feel the need to ruin the best character in the process. Feel like Alternative would be very hard to rewatch knowing how badly they f***ed up Pets in the end.

Are Progressive and Alternative worth looking for? Keep meaning to catch up on them. Their quality will decide my enthusiasm for the next two.

Are Progressive and Alternative worth looking for? Keep meaning to catch up on them. Their quality will decide my enthusiasm for the next two. I think they're worth watching, they're both perfectly fine, but certainly don't go in expecting something at the level of the original. Progressive is closer to it in tone and structure, but can feel like a retread and is too overstuffed with subplots to where it's hard to get invested in the cast that much; Alternative is a very different flavor of show that doesn't really feel like the others, but it has some pretty serious plot issues that arise as it goes along. That said I don't think they ruin anything about the original, other than maybe that Progressive removes some ambiguity with Haruko's character by making her motivations and nature a bit more clear. Though Alternative if anything kind of serves to make her more confusing because her behavior in it doesn't really match with her other depictions. For what it's worth Shoegaze is being directed by the same person as Alternative while Grunge is being done by someone new, so watching them should give more idea of what to expect out of Shoegaze than out of Grunge. Though the person who directed Alternative also directed Punch Line and that's a much better show than Alternative (and honestly kinda feels more like FLCL than it) despite also kind of falling apart at the end so who knows.

yeah, this surprised me this morning. I personally liked Alternative better than I did Progressive, curious to see how I feel about these new series.

I want to get excited for this but after how much I was not a fan of Progressive and Alternative I just can't. I think a ton of the original FLCL's appeal at the time was there was nothing like it since access to anime for the US was Toonami/Adult Swim. To be use to stuff like DBZ or Cowboy Bebop then get thrown something as insane and different as FLCL is a game changer.
Now with access with pretty much anything Japan has got with a bigger selection of over the top anime, FLCL doesn't stand out as much as it use to. I honestly think the original series was a case of lightning in a bottle that can't be duplicated. Progressive and Alternative was proof of that. There will never be another FLCL.

Feels like I'd be more interested in this if the art style was different. Just not feeling it. The music and the world still feel fun as hell to watch but just don't dig the srt so far.

Apparently the CG look is specifically a Grunge thing and Shoegaze will be traditional, which I do think helps a bit. Not crazy about the style on it so far but doing it as a stylistic choice instead of just cost-cutting I can at least see some value in.

Grunge premieres tonight. Seems like there's pretty much zero hype around it, and I can't really claim to have any real faith in it, but I'll give it a fair shot, while I can bash them I don't really think Progressive and Alternative are the worst things ever or anything.

So is there going to be a simu sub? No announcement from places like Crunchyroll about subbing the Japanese version.

So is there going to be a simu sub? No announcement from places like Crunchyroll about subbing the Japanese version. Doubt it, probably just release it later since the whole point of it being made is for Adult Swim purposes. Pretty sure the Progressive and Alternative subs were also released after the dubs had finished, besides the first episode of Progressive.

So that was like waaaaaaay worse than Progressive and Alternative ever got. Just felt like they thought the issue those had was that they were too different from the original and would benefit from feeling more like complete retreads, and the art style is really offputting and ugly to where it's just plain not pleasant to look at. Especially the mayor, every second that character was onscreen I desperately wanted him to go the hell away because his design was hideous and everything else about him was wildly irritating. Very, very glad he doesn't survive the episode at least.
It wasn't completely without merit, think it has some good jokes along the way and I like the main character being a bit more self-assured than normal for this franchise, but I was struggling to even sit all the way through it. I might watch next week but if it isn't any better than this was I doubt I'll be finishing the show.
Also goddamn this show did not earn having the extended Blues Drive Monster sequence in the opening episode. That was so, so, SO much lamer than when they used it in the original show.

So it turns out the reason they haven't been saying how long the seasons are is that they're only three episodes each, and Shoegaze will be starting on the 30th. Yeah, who the hell knows.
