I remember being SUPER hyped for Styles/Orton, considering they put on a clinic at LitDown! a few years earlier. But no.

Nakamura’s entire run has been such a letdown simply because of that opening banger. It's not because of that. He lost to Jinder Mahal twice and has been booked as a choke artist. That alone would have made his run a letdown. Yeah, there was the defense of the Jinder Mahal Match oh well he'll get the big match at mania they have plans for him... (instead of letting him win at Summerslam in New York where the crowd were fully expecting it to happen and were vocal whenever Nakamura did anything and were silent in response to Jinder... and when Jinder won it was just complete silence (which to be fairish... was the response literally anytime Jinder won or entered the arena... or cut a promo...) they then did a really good job at the rumble, he was over but the worked the crowd perfectly in his victory especially with Roman being hte last person in the ring... cool. then they hype the Mania match just solely on... hey this match is gonna be badass... hey this match is going to blow your f***ing mind... and didn't really have much of a story otherwise from what I remember. Then the Mania match didn't get out of first gear, which had the excuse that it was to set up the heel turn (which as I said at the time made more sense if it happened BEFORE mania) but still... the problem was after the heel turn, they never let Nakamura win. He kept facing Styles and getting double count outs and double dq's or AJ would win... which killed his entire momentum because he was a paper tiger as a heel... we're supposed to think he's a threat but... like... he never won. And Nak's had a few really good matches besides the Sami one, his match with Cena that was on a random ass Smackdown for instance was awesome... and the crowd STILL want to root for him but like everyone else in that position the WWE just don't give them the opportunity to... or they use that to help build more INFINITE HEAT! like the time he went on a tear in a gauntlet match only to get beat up by Roman and friends... and then literally nothing came of that? and someone else got subbed into the title match instead of the winner of the gauntlet...

The worse thing about that was that his replacement? Kevin Owens. Who already lost to Roman. So they had a guy win a title match and, to this day, still hasn't had said title match, nor does anyone remember he's got a title match to be replaced by the guy who would go on to somehow have all the title matches with Roman and lose every one.

Owens is another one they "protected" him by having him almost beat Roman then Uso or Heyman interference. Which works like once... if it happens multiple times you look like an idiot...

A lot of his Wrestlemania matches didn't live up to the hype though (Jericho, Nakamura, Orton).
Michaels was Mr. Wrestlemania because even if expectations were sky-high, he would usually deliver, sometimes over-deliver. The only time AJ's really done that is the Shane match.

The Nakamura and Orton matches were two of the most boring things I've ever seen.

That Nakamura match was ASS f***, I remember being in the crowd for that and everyone wanted to love it and then it just sucked I feel like this has been most Nakamura matches since his match with Sami Zayn, and I even say this as a Nakamura fan. I will say that's not all his fault though... he had long ass feuds with Bobby Roode and Jinder Mahal... that helps literally no one. Nak made me a fan in one match then never met that hype again

maybe....
I liked all those matches except for the one with Orton, which was a major let down for me
but I see the point the OP is trying to make

The funny thing, upon reading the thread title I had almost automatically prepared my response as being “Oh, of course”
However, once I was reminded of the list of matches he’s had at “Wrestlemania” I was quickly reminded while he’s always (aside from last year) had a prominent position or match of the card, none of his matches have stole the show and I think that was a big part of Shawn Michaels claim to being “Mr. Wrestlemania”
It didn’t matter where you put him on the card, or who he faced off against… He was going to steal the show because he was “Mr. Wrestlemania”
If you look at AJ Styles matches on the show of shows, and they’ve all been average-to-good, but none of them outside of maybe the Boneyard Match with The Undertaker had people talking as if it was the best thing on the card, and as much as I personally enjoyed the presentation of encounter… An asterisk has to be placed next to it because it wasn’t a match, but a cinematic experience.
Also, I vividly remember the hype around Styles vs. Nakamura, and it not living up to it, but due to the ending people thought their best WWE match was being held off for later, and his match with Shane McMahon was a great Shane McMahon match, but once again an average AJ Styles match that didn’t steal the show.
As for his matches against Orton and Jericho, once again they were two fine matches, but each were overshadowed by other better ones on the card so I just don’t feel like Styles has truly earned the moniker of the “New Mr. Wrestlemania”
Especially considering that Seth Rollins has had far better showings than him at the showcase of the immortals.
With that said, I honestly fully expect for him and Edge to steal the show at “Wrestlemania” this year.

That Nakamura match was ASS f***, I remember being in the crowd for that and everyone wanted to love it and then it just sucked It was like the first slower 2/3 of a NJPW match without the last hot 1/3 that really makes it great. I don't know what happened, they are both capable of so much better, and have done MUCH better with each other. Maybe age just caught up with Nakamura, maybe bad planning on the part of the agents

Maybe age just caught up with Nakamura, maybe bad planning on the part of the agents I think it was bad planning combined with the fact it had been 65 hours since WrestleMania started so the crowd wasn't ready to get invested in something like it. Like, both guys have had better matches after that and it wasn't like their Wrestle Kingdom match was a billion years before that either.

The crowd was up and ready for the match when it started. It just gave them nothing to hang on to.

Again I am almost certain they wanted it to be like the setup to the heel turn... which for a mania match sounds like a dumb idea... but... then like they never delivered on the setup.

AJ is probably not the choice for this, to be fair, but who is? Is there anyone you can choose, really?
