This is an insanely stupid thing to say and really bad omen for the quality of the main roster going forward: www.espn.com/wwe/story/_/id/33600978/how-wwe-using-nil-find-future-talent-why-northwestern-joe-spivak-all-inLike...there are so many arguments why this isn't a good idea. The biggest being that there is no chance that anyone aged 25 or younger on the main roster and plucked directly out of college and onto the main roster after a very small stint in NXT is going to boost the product or truly succeed. And I'm sure people are gonna point to Bron being great and all, but he's the exception rather than the norm. Also the last time WWE tried to put an age cap on things it massively blew up in their face and it took them a pretty long time to recover. And they probably wouldn't have if stuff like The Shield or the 4HW never took off. They need to find a delicate balance but WWE always goes to extremes.

So, Drew McIntyre goes from the dredge of facing Baron this weekend at Mania to next year struggling to make some green as heck 20 year old with 2 months experience they peg to be the next Gable Steveson look good.

My takeaway was that he's saying WWE doesn't want to be signing guys close to 30 and then bringing them up at 32-33. I think getting younger's a perfectly reasonable expectation, especially if they're just not out for the indie workrate guys. They want to be signing guys at 24 and having them ready for WWE TV before they're 30. Seems reasonable to me? I really don't think they're saying people will only be in NXT for a year.

I think that’s what it is. They want to bring the average age of the roster down, which is smart. They’re not literally only going to sign 25 year olds and under (we already know this, they just signed mid 30s Cody). It’s like the “WWE is looking to sign more young stars from the sports world” reports which a lot of people twisted into “WWE isn’t going to hire indie wrestlers anymore”, which of course wasn’t the case. They’ll still sign veteran types but they’ll be more picky. In 2022 if they sign a Bálor/Zayn/Joe/Owens/Nakamura/Shirai level star they’re probably heading straight to the main roster like AJ Styles or Cody and not spending years of their prime in developmental and being well into their 30s by the time they called up. People sometimes talk about Damien Priest as a younger guy for instance but he’s almost 40. They badly need that next core of 25-35 year olds because most of the current midcard is mid-late 30s, some even 40s and that’s not sustainable. They badly need that next younger core which hopefully will eventually be the likes of Bron Breakker/Carmelo Hayes/Austin Theory/Gable Steveson/Montez Ford/Rhea Ripley/Rok-C/Gigi Dolin/Cora Jade.

My issue is not so much the age but history has not been kind to them when they sign talent that young with no prior experience in the wrestling business at all.
Brock did it untill he quickly learned how much he hates the gawd damn travel and f***ed off to do his own thing for years untill Vince agreed to make his contract out of literal gold and god tier negotiating power.
Gable Steveson already has his eyes on both HollyWood and MMA so how long untill that guy just gets sick of the travel and just does what Bork did.
Nothing wrong with wanting younger talent but that comes with huge inherent risks aka the Bork situation.

The way I read it is that they want people on the main roster by 25 now. And some folks may be ready by then, others maybe 26, 27 or just at or just after 30. The point is they want a younger core. Edge debuted at 25. Sheamus debuted at 31. Gargano would have been 34 if he moved to the main roster. Priest is almost 40. They need a mix of younger guys and vets. I don't think they're abandoning the idea of signing certain veteran talent if it makes sense. They're just not letting people hit their peaks in NXT, that seems like a sound strategy. Their current midcard's going to age out quickly if they don't do something.

They want to get people into developmental sooner. That's not a bad thing. "We would like that [age] number to come down, especially on the developmental standpoint,". There talking about getting guys and girls into their program sooner. That's not a bad thing.

Amusing since they almost exclusively have older talent (or talent who have been there for a long time at least) at the top right now.
They SAY they want younger stars, but they have been pretty bad at building them recently.

They SAY they want younger stars, but they have been pretty bad at building them recently. That's pretty much why they're doing this and totally overhauled NXT a year ago. Stuff like this isn't going to be felt for the next 2-to 3 years as the first wave of NXT 2.0 stars start coming to the main roster.

Tracks with the reports from the developmental overhaul where "nobody over 30" was one of the pushes being thrown around. They want younger, greener developmental talent, but even during the NXT Superindie era, you had talent like Nia Jax and Braun Strowman getting yanked up way ahead of their time and having to learn shit on the job. We're not going to see an Angelo Dawkins who spends seven years in developmental testing out different schticks until he finds one that works and he gets his stuff together enough. We're going to see a meat grinder of college athletes in over their heads.

They’ve just done a crap job with most of them.

Gable Steveson already has his eyes on both HollyWood and MMA so how long untill that guy just gets sick of the travel and just does what Bork did. Well. Having his eyes on Hollywood and MMA doesn’t make you sick of travel. They’re both two separate things. Steveson isn’t going to get sick of travel, for one thing, because he’s gonna be handled like the megastar he is. Brock is super introverted guy who was raised on a farm. So the grind of travel was gonna catch up to him for sure, especially all the flights. Steveson isn’t ever gonna bother with MMA. It’s a negotiating chip. He was doing it before he signed to WWE too. In one of his interviews recently, he even called out that he probably won’t even do it, but he’s “thinking” about it. OK. Would I see him going to Hollywood though? 100%. But hey, if it’s. Rock situation and they lose him after 5 years then that’s a good problem for WWE to have that they’ve churned out the next big Hollywood star.

The only people who are main roster level talent by 25 are not gonna be college athletes who started wrestling at 22-23 unless they are Bron/Brock like Unicorn. Even a lot of all time great's were shit wrestlers early on.

Yeah, on the face of it, there's nothing wrong with what was said. Black and Gold's problem was the reliance of names that were older and only there to boost the brand rather than help the main roster (intentionally or otherwise) and their strategy of developing people from the ground up who are younger makes a lot of sense. Now actually doing the training and work and making sure they get the chance to develop the way they should... that's where my concern lies. They basically have a lot to prove in that department in my eyes, especially after scrapping basically half the staff.

I just wanted to clarify that I don't think they're looking to have a bunch of 25-year-olds with 6 months of experience running around on RAW. I just don't see them being that nuts.

Like, the only reason Azeez and Omos are called up because they're big, they're not going to look at Cora Jade and think she's ready after WrestleMania, that'd help nobody especially not her.
