I’ve been listening to that song “Pay Your Way In Pain” by St. Vincent recently. I looked up the video and well…I thought of this thread title.

Most modern videos are just the song’s lyrics on screen.

Most modern videos are just the song’s lyrics on screen. That seems to be a common practice but there’s still plenty of videos that aren’t that. My guess is that part of it is just to maximize YouTube/social media profits. That way if the artist never gets around to actually making a video for ir, it can still be on places like YouTube.

For sheer laziness, it's hard to top this effort by a band that should and could have done a hell of a lot better.

About half of the Replacements' videos. Although to be fair, that was conceptual laziness.

The video for Dead Horse by Guns N’ Roses is just concert footage flashing by as the song plays.

Yeah, those are just lyric videos. Many artists today will release an official YouTube audio, a lyric video with effects on the words, and an official video for the lead singles. Also a lot of older artists have official new videos on YouTube for past hits. My true favorite:

How about the Michael Jackson "Rock With You" music video? His brothers would have been wise to invest in some of this minimalism four years later. Their video for "Torture" threw every idea at every wall when Mike couldn't make the shoot.

Flock of Seagulls - I ran.
Granted it was an early music video where they really didn't know what they were doing... but... it was them in a room with mirrors and aluminum foil on the cameras to try and blend them in

I was just listening to Trippin’ on a Whole in a Paper Heart by Stone Temple Pilots. The song is amazing. Unfortunately, the music video is just random crap and footage of the band.

Any...ANY video that's a 'live' video but it's actually the album track played over a performance. Exception: Touch of Grey. If you've seen it, you know why.

For sheer laziness, it's hard to top this effort by a band that should and could have done a hell of a lot better. What really gets me is that they couldnt spring for a drum kit so the drummer is left shadow boxing in the background. Rush's video for "Time Stands Still" is right up there for all time laziest music video.
