Your reaction when Bret Hart tells you, “We got a couple of guys here” and two big southerners come in with painted faces and bondage gear:

I feel bad Randy never got a run with Demolition but that gimmick would have gone nowhere with him being involved. It just wasn't a good fit. Barry was a great choice and gelled so well with Bill Eadie. I can't see any action figures or major PPV matches or title runs with Randy. It would probably be opener matches at best or matches mid PPV that just cooled down the fans.

Wow, this is pretty amazing, thanks for sharing. Smash's intonation and verbiage actually made me think of Bushwhacker Luke "what d'you think, mate? Tell your bloody mother!"

It's crazy just how short of a time that Smash lasted. It wasn't even "blink and you miss it."

It was either his facial features or body type. Barry Darsow came in and had the eagle tattoo and they had paint on his forearms until the went with the arm pads, to disguise him from Krusher from JCP.

That original style of face paint was so bizarre.

There were two Smashes? I learned something new today. The first I heard of it was when WWF sent out a brochure for their stockholders-my father was a broker and signed me up for stock around 1999. I was shocked because I never knew it. It had never been mentioned on any internet site I was on at the time. Maybe 2002-2004 Wrestlecrap did a feature on the original team, pretty much making fun of the paint jobs the whole entry. It wasn't like a major thing there were two Smashes. I don't think I read anything eles until like 2007 or 2008 when Randy did an autograph signing being billed as the original Smash. He was signing promo photos that were of Barry Darsow! He had to know it wasn't him! But Barry looked so different in the picture the promoters didn't think anything of it, nor did the fans. You can probably find it on google. Him being Smash is something that doesn't get out so much. Barry was so awesome as Smash and Randy really was so short lived in the role. But I think it shows the gimmick wasn't meant to be a long term success. The Machine gimmick was done since Andre was about to turn heel and the Moondog gimmick was pretty much a total jobber role for the team. But something needed to be done for both guys. I think it really wasn't until late 1987 when Demolition really came into their own and adopted a style that was pretty cool for WWF tag teams. I wonder if Randy and Bill stayed together and figured it out in late 1987, if it would have worked, if Randy had stuck around in the role. The reason the stock brochure even mentioned Randy as Smash was because it had reports on lawsuits with WWF. The Razor/Diesel infringement from WCW was mentioned and it was mentioned that Bill and Randy created the Demolition gimmick. I can't remember anything else though.

Wow...I think that stockholder thing would be interesting to see. First I learned of it was as it happened, actually! For some reason I didn't notice, but then I got an issue of Wrestling Eye that outed the two Smashes. (WE was kind of borderline inside for wrestling mags at the time, as they'd have a bit of behind the scenes news, real names and identities, etc.)

I don't know why though. I would imagine it might be a collector item, like not sure people would have kept it. I seem to remember it having a blue cover, it was paperback and like 12x10 inches and it was pretty thick too.

I’m thinking Randy Colley’s brief role as Smash was to merely to introduce the Demolition team on the house show circuit whilst WWF were awaiting Barry Darsow’s JCP contract to run out.
