Tough Enough basically set all the participants up to fail by giving them minimal training but doing so on television, so the two options were either for them to disappear for more training afterwards and lose all the momentum (such as it was) that they built up on the programme, or sending them out into the ring when they were nowhere near ready, never mind to wrestle on a nationally televised TV show. Those who succeeded did so despite the show rather than because of it.

Looking back at it... Maven didn't really do all that bad for himself.

Maven's biggest issue is they needed the winner to be on tv to make it seem like Tough Enough meant something... but at the same time... he needed more seasoning.
He also had the "Won Tough Enough" gimmick for... like 10 years... before they actually did something else with him as Simon Dean's spokesman.

I liked the Stone Cold version simply due to his reaction to Cameron: Melina vs Alicia Fox, lol. And Austin got in the ring and had a match of sorts against the cocky guy and it looked good.

Whatever happened to Skidmarks? I think he was a wash. Current OVW champion. He plays an annoying heel rock star talking in a British accent, with an idiot groupie (played by Dark regular Arie Alexander) and plays a double-neck electric guitar to annoy fans and faces. He's still kinda shit in the ring, but his character work is top-notch.

Does America's Got Talent succeed just because none of its winners ever became stars? As a TV show, I think it was successful in that it was made for entertaining tv.

Yes because it produced Nidia which gave us her skits with Jamie Noble when they became rich, they were fantastic.

I'd say the only true failure was the 2nd season. They got the hint with season 3 that the winners needed training, and honestly had Matt not had health issues he would have been a big star IMO.
The reboot was weird. I enjoyed the first season but it was clear WWE kind of list interest when Rhima was eliminated so early. Then when Martin got hurt I'm convinced they decided Silent Rage would win because he was already under contract. I didn't watch the 2nd season but heard mixed things

Weirdly, I'd argue the Diva Search was a bigger success

The Diva Search gave us Eve Torres, Christy Hemme, Michelle McCool, Maria Kanellis, Layla, Maryse, Candice Michelle, Brooke Adams, the Bellas, and Taryn Terrell. The Diva Search produced a lot of women that stuck around in wrestling for years, and had good careers.

It's amazing that "SILENT RAGE" and "THE YETI" weren't natural born successes to wrestling, truly...
Also calling yourself THE YETI seems like a natural wrestling curse.

Yeah, but that's not what the OP is asking. As for the comparison, I haven't really watched either show, but does America's Got Talent involve training, or is it just a talent show? If so, makes it a bit apples to oranges.

I think it was successful as it was an entertaining show that produced or at least had many future stars come through.
It was also a success as I think it inspired a lot of kids/teenagers that were fans in that era to actually train to become pro wrestlers. It was a peek behind the curtain that I think led to many of today’s stars choosing this as their career path.

Anyone who came through it, good or bad, was never really the point. They'd have been good or bad regardless.
Nobody in the world seriously believes Tough Enough is the optimum way to create a pro wrestler, any more than the producers of The Apprentice believe that's how you find great business minds. They're entertainment shows.

Um, well it at least introduced everyone to Sara Lee so it has that going for it, which is nice. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

I enjoyed the show back when Al Snow was the trainer and they shot it at the warehouse by the train tracks. It had a gritty old-school, wrestling bootcamp feel to it. Once they brought on Stone Cold and gave him a smoke-filled entrance whenever he entered the training facility, I completely lost interest. They could not have made a "reality show", and I use that term loosely, look anymore phony.
