Maybe Iam the only one who doesn’t get this whole blaming basketball for low ratings thing? Like, if wrestling fans wanted to watch wrestling, They would watch wrestling. Regardless what else was on? Not if they're a sports fan and their team is in it. I speak from experience, if the Sixers are in the playoffs, and they're on the same time as wrestling, I'm watching the Sixers, and flipping back and forth That's going to effect the ratings, that's millions of people who are watching something that isn't usually there, it's going to take at least a couple hundred to thousand or more viewers who are even diehard wrestling fans and at LEAST split their attention. We've seen AEW when this stuff isn't on have way more consistent viewership and usually go over a million, it matters. They'd be number one this week if the NBA wasn't there.

That presumes one is (a) a wrestling fan to the exclusion of other things, (b) more of a wrestling fan than a fan of other things, or (c) that even if one is more of a wrestling fan than other things, that some other things can be more important than a random weeknight episode of wrestling that they can catch up on later. As we know, when major news events happen people turn on the TV news even when wrestling is on. For that period of time, whatever news event (war, pandemic, election, etc.) is more important to them. Same for other live sporting events. I’m an NFL fan, but I’m *really* a Steelers fan — I generally watch Raw (or at least have it on) on Mondays but if the Steelers are playing on MNF, I’m watching the Steelers. I can catch up on Raw. The NBA, probably more than most sports, gains intensity and viewer interest for the playoffs. There’s a ton of regular-season games and yes they mean *something* but they don’t mean as much as the playoffs. I watch almost no NBA in the regular season but I do watch in the playoffs — not every game, every night, but right now I’m digging the Memphis-Minnesota series and wanting to see Ja Morant as he blossoms into a major star. So if that conflicts, I’ll probably watch the NBA game. Doesn’t make me not a wrestling fan.

Yeah, people still watched it, it was the #4 show on cable for the night. So enough wrestling fans watched it, that it beat 146 other shows on the list. But when playoffs happen though, it loses some audience. Are you saying that popular sporting events don't take away some of the audience, sometimes? That's not a reality?

Thanks for your guy’s insight, I should of pointed out that Iam not a sports watcher so I don’t excited whenever there’s a big game on. I just don’t care. When I have free time when wrestling is on, that’s the first thing Iam watching

You can tell certain sports have an effect when all major wrestling shows are down like they have been the past few weeks. NXT is an exception partially because it has such a small audience that it's less prone to swings for major events. I also think that when sports are on, the latter end of shows are more prone to dips because a lot of folks DVR shows and once a game comes on or gets close, they'll say that they can watch the rest later. Having something especially must see can negate that but that's hard to come by these days and I wouldn't hold it too much against Scorpio or Sammy. Like Cody was in a very low rates segment on RAW a few weeks ago but that was because it was the third hour and those generally struggle and especially do against sports. Wrestling is still very popular but it's still not live sports to people. A lot of folks will say they can DVR a snow and catch it later. They won't do that with the NBA. It's just a different beast.

I’m a big wrestling fan…big enough that I hang out on here and post about it. But I’m also a huge sports fan in general. An NBA playoff game begs to be watched live…it’s not as easily DVRed and watched later as wrestling is. So I watched the NBA games last night live (though I flipped over to Dynamite for parts I was particularly interested in), then watched Dynamite today on DVR. I’m definitely not the only one.

These threads and Twitter are precisely why I watch AEW in an IWC-free manner.

The NBA playoffs are a big draw and a lot of wrestling fans are also sports fans in general. If it's wrestling vs a big game with my team in it, I will choose the latter. And it has to be emphasized this isn't just an AEW thing either. WWE is also losing a lot of viewers from Raw and Smackdown.
