Disappointed to find the old one's been locked after a couple of years of inactivity so....
Been on and off rewatching old episodes of the show lately and I kind of had to make a new thread for this monologue from season 6, episode 17 Rage -
"I'm gonna hurt the kids, hurt your kids, Stabler! I'm gonna kill all the kids, what're you gonna do about it, huh?! Then I'm gonna kill their puppies, and I'm gonna kill their kitties! I'm a psycho killer, what are you going to do about it?! Come on! Come on! I'm a psycho killer! What are you going to do about it, huh? Heh... Come on! Come on! Hahaha... You're a hoot, Stabler. fakes choking Bwah, kill the kids..."
In general something I've kind of found with this show seeing the early days again is that season 4 or so is where they started to really go insane and season 6 is where they just completely ran out of ideas for more grounded stories and started going utterly batshit with whole episodes of nothing but one insane plot twist after another. Cannot wait until I get to some of the even more crazy stuff down the line like the winery episode - where it starts with a dude painting in the victim's blood and ultimately leads to a woman committing suicide during a press conference because she's being harassed over yelling at someone over typos - and the coffee one where a dude's dad puts him through a window then his lawyer throws him and herself off the roof down like 50 feet onto a car.

Not the show proper, the other Law & Order did a Theranos inspired episode despite the real Theranos case being over the top enough already. I mean look at this shit (language warning): youtu.be/GrT0jKOhnD4

This was a bizarre cold open to an episode.

This was a bizarre cold open to an episode. Yeah, that one's always stood out to me on sheer, "Who talks like this?"

One of the more, "This was written by just writing down whatever first came to mind episodes," that I just reached, the season 7 one Storm. Idiot who kidnapped some kids takes them to a carousel, they take the opportunity to try to escape. In the escape kid is lightly nudged in what appears to be the leg before slowly and carefully lying flat on her back on the road, somehow her forehead is busted open from this. Somehow this snowballs into being about secret anthrax experiments in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the government locks up, apparently forever, a random reporter for blowing the whistle on it.

So me and my GF have been binging this show.... for some reason lol.
And you can really see the progression of "normal bult slightly exaggerated cop show" to full on "batshit crazy".
We're on season 6, so there's still a mix of more normal episodes with crazy ones, but something I've noticed as we binge watch is how goddamn depressing the show can be.

I’ve been streaming more of this lately. It’s so campy and fun, even when it’s dark.

**Shameless Self Promotion** In my storied career as a background actor I have either on SVU twice. The first was over fifteen years ago, the episode was called “Streetwise.” The premise is about a cult of homeless people, the scene I remember best is Stabler and Olivia using food to get a kid to spill her guts. The scene I was in is at the very start when they are interrogating the victim’s boyfriend at some gala event. They filmed on Halloween day at a country club in West Orange, NJ. It’s hilarious to me because a production assistant just kept telling me “okay go there, now go there” so it looks like I teleport; first I’m on the stairs, then I’m behind Stabler, then I’m behind the boyfriend.
The other was about three or four years ago, but I can’t remember the name of the episode. The plot premise was about a young Muslim man who kills his wife. I was in a courtroom scene where he is being cross examined, just sitting in the gallery. It was honestly not a pleasant experience as it was an all nighter, which I hate. But I did get the bonus of nearly walking face first into Mariska Hargitay’s chest; I was in the hall just fiddling on my phone even she came barreling around the corner, between her being tall and me being short it was almost a face to bosom collision. I said “Oh excuse me” and she kept walking like I didn’t exist. Career highlight.

I don’t know if they still have them, but when I would have the show play in the background on cable TV during commercial breaks they would have the actors do little shoot interviews. About how important the show was and how it educated audiences in ways that could help us with practical matters. Because you never know when you could have such down to earth problems as Uncle Jesse from Full House impregnating you without your prior consent. Good thing this show taught me I can stab him with a knife that makes things explode.

In alternate universe, John Mulaney is the head writer for SVU.

One of the most baffling episodes, which is one I just reached, Clock, is one where a girl looks younger than she is due to a medical condition and despite emphasizing that it has no bearing on her mental state the episode seems to just, like... Think she should be forced to be forever celibate and coddled anyway? It's weird, things work out for her in the end more or less, but the show seems to play this like it's a bad thing.
It kind of walks a weird line, because it's kind of drawing the wrong conclusion from the situation? Like, it's yikesy that this girl's dating a guy who's 30 when she's 17, but they gist over that and focus more on, "She doesn't look mature!" and somehow make that their problem even though what's going on is perfectly legal.

I think that's a legit thing. I think I saw something about a woman who looks like she's 12 even though she's actually well into her 20s.

One of the more idiotic contrived episodes, Confrontation. Man is obsessively raping the same women over and over and over trying to impregnate them. Eventually despite ample amounts of evidence they decide they don't have anything they can hold him on, pretty blatantly just to stretch the episode out. Also throws out the bizarre, basically completely unprompted line, "Most female scientists are unattractive."

Sometimes it's the only thing on that's even remotely good, on my TV with crappy channels. I normally watch the intro and a few minutes then change the channel again because the stories have been done time after time.
I think most episodes are over the top. I think the earlier mid season episodes (maybe 3-4 and pre Stabler leaving) were somewhat more normal but lots of focus on Stabler trying to hurt a perp. I'd rather watch an episode solely with Kellie Giddish, Peter Scanavino and Ice T as the main actors. I always saw Mariska as just a supporting actor but with her being a mainstay, she's the lead. There's almost always a lot of episodes that have complete focus on her. I know SVU is different than the original which was more storyline and not character driven but I just never got into her as the lead.
I think some of the best episodes were the ones with Connie Nielsen. The Jerry Lewis episode were especially great.
