I was watching Reliving The War Episode 100 from Wrestling Bios and it covered Goldberg’s TV debut in WCW. He mentioned how Nitro’s fast paced style of programming made Goldberg’s debut work and I feel that Dynamite can sometimes feel how Nitro used to (as in a whole lot of content crammed into their 2 hours). It got me thinking and then made me realise I’m not up to date on the indie scene at all these days, so who is out there that could have a jobber entrance but surprise beats a name style debut?
This may also be a way of asking for matches to watch, but the AEW debut thought was the most interesting part of this thought.

No idea about an unknown but that’s basically what they’re doing with Hook.
Kind of crazy to me the nearest thing to a modern Goldberg looks like Hook. Or Jade Cargill.

I was thinking about this after watching it, because Dynamite has a similar vibe to Nitro and the whole idea of a guy just showing up, unhyped and getting a win would really work. Trouble is is that there was a lot of actual confusion as to who he was got a while, which is reflected in the contemporary Observers. That confusion and vibe of 'who as that guy?'really gave the Goldberg push it's foundations and I don't think you could do that anymore. That said, no one knew who the hell Wardlow was so you never know.

People complain non-stop about who someone is, why AEW doesnt explain them, why they should have to watch the indies or Dark to know who someone is. You have "journalists" complaining about this.
Hook sort of had this going on, and youd get a ton of "I dont understand Hook. Why do people like him?" all over the net. Jade Cagrill had people frothing at the mouth to get her off their TVs because shes not a great seller.
You cant have Goldberg because people are obsessed with criticism, and cant just enjoy someone cool and green coming along. People reading this comment are looking for a reason to criticize. It wont happen again like it did in 96,97. I was lucky enough to see the birth of trolls in newsgroups, but it was underground.
And whoever surprise loses to this new proposed person? Get ready to read how theyre a jobber now, are buried, and being wasted by AEW.

Yeesh. This got negative quick.
The comparison of HOOK to Goldberg isn't right.
Goldberg looked like a snarling beast that looked like he used to be in the NFL.
HOOK looks like a twink that might be good at lacrosse.
Wardlow could've been a "Goldberg," had his AEW career started out differently, however, I would state that I only would want another "Goldberg" archetype if they legitimately showed improvement as their career progressed. Goldberg never did, and this is why I don't like using him as an example for what a green hoss should be.

That doesn't really wash because this angle would be deliberately having the wrestler not be known The key complaint to which you refer is broadly about 'next week this Japanese/indie guy debuts' with no explanation. That isn't the same as purposefully leaving someone unexplained. The main complaint if they did the Goldberg angle would likely be how nobody is actually anonymous in a post Internet world any more

And if not, before the bell rang people on twitter and forums like these would be telling you who he is … and you’d have his whole bio up before the three count. As for an indie guy, no way. The most obscure indie worker in the world would be identified immediately (probably by someone telling you how he botched at their local bingo hall). Different world. You have to find different ways to spring surprises. ‘Unknown powerhouse’ isn’t going to work.

Didn't they do that with Abadon for one week a year or two ago? It seemed like she was just a warm body for a debuting Anna Jay to beat. Anna was getting video packages hyping her arrival and she was the only one who got a televised entrance. Abadon ended up squashing her though.
AEW almost literally had Goldberg himself too I think. Weren't there reports that Tony Khan was going to bring him in when Dynamite debuted in 2019 and do another streak but he re-signed with WWE in the end? You have to imagine any modern streak he had would just have been him squashing your Aaron Solos and Peter Avalon's in 90 seconds every week to pop the crowd because him going over established names wouldn't have gone over well.

I feel like this would've been perfect for Will Hobbs, honestly. I like the path he's taken well enough, but he seems like the right kind of talent to get over this way.

I feel like they could have done this with Nick Comoroto but that time has come and gone.

If they were going to do it with someone, I think Keith Lee was the one.

If they were going to do it with someone, I think Keith Lee was the one. He was wrestling in WWE title matches previously, how could it not be telegraphed?
