Instead of what we got, take out Triple H. Let's say the Undertaker match never happens either.
Where would you go next with him?
It's a simple one for me.
John Cena at a PPV has an open challenge and Sting accepts and wins the US title. Proceeds to defend it until Wrestlemania where he loses and puts over a new star.
A perfect use for Sting.

Honestly I wouldn't want a consolation prize for Sting, not at this stage in the game for him.
It would be reminiscent of when Sting won the US title in WCW during the time when Hogan had the WCW title. It just always felt like Sting was treading water and had been since late 1992. Had it not been for his transformation into Crow Sting, I doubt he would have ever been World champion again.
In 2015, you either treat Sting as a special attraction like Undertaker, or you pull the trigger all the way and make him World champion. Going middle of the road with a consolation prize of a midcard title just doesn't work.

I feel like everyone just forgets how damn bad Sting was toward the end in TNA, guy could barely do anything. Sure, he showed up in working shape against Triple H and looked great, but without the benefit of hindsight it's easy to see why they wouldn't really want to give him a super huge amount to do initially.

I don't think Sting winning a mid-card title in WWE goes over well.
Sting versus Bray Wyatt needed to happen if we didn't get Taker/Sting... but that will forever be the match that got away.

Atleast we would had gotten Sting Vs. John Cena instead. Alot of people forget but before he became the Doctor Of Thuganomics, Cena look was heavily based on Surfer Era Sting.

Also it's not like the WWE weren't going to do anything with him after the Seth match... and like Seth isn't what caused the issues that ultimately lead to WWE Retiring him...

I don't think you need to go all or nothing with your part-timers. I know it's WWE and they don't care about the midcard, but in an ideal world they could have used him to give meaning and gravity to that spot. Throwing him more permanently into the main event scene of the mid '10s when it already had enough part-time guys would have only further hurt the top end of the card.

Probably just coming from a place of not being particularly nostalgic for Sting but I find him pretty insufferable in how AEW uses him. Find it hard to care about him at all when every one of his matches is just him tagging in long enough to do his spots and jump off something high and he wins every single time, all while being in the most unstoppable team in the company means jack shit in the rankings.

Right, but I think the reason Sting does work well in AEW is because you don't have a lot of old old school acts like Undertaker, Triple H, Goldberg and Lesnar. I think if WWE brought in Sting and proceeded to value him as less than the guys mentioned by keeping him in the midcard, it would be a waste. Then again, his run in WWE was essentially a waste when they decided to use him as a patsy to take on the Authority. I get where you're coming from though.

Koko B. Ware comes out of retirement, and they finally have the mixed-species match everyone has been begging for with their respected birds.

I think it would be utterly stupid for him to beat someone for it. Although if it was Cena, that would have been super popular (and I think this is the apex of the Cena character but the pop would be immense).
And I think the person he lost it to would get a hell of a rub.
