Also, why is it a win for Punk to get Hangman to lose his cool? Like I get MJF trying to goad Wardlow into hitting him as a ref so he can DQ him. But Punk’s ‘best in the world’ is about him being the best wrestler in the world, not the best brawler. So wouldn’t he want Hangman to come out and try to beat him in a technical match and play to CMP’s strengths? Page is a fine wrestler but his signature match is a Texas Deathmatch, not pure rules or amateur style. He can go but he’s more dangerous when he’s trying to kill you, right? I mean if there was an ongoing storyline where Page outwrestles everyone with technical masterpieces but loses when he blows his cool, sure, but that hasn’t been the story they’re telling in the buildup to this. How does CMP getting Hangman to punch him give him an edge? Because a) it shows that he's in Hangman's head and b) gives a potential justification for cheating to win

It's a win not for anything to do with his temperament going into the match, but because he can claim "I wanted to shake hands and he attacked me". Although I'd say you're a bit off with Hangman on the anger front; his story in Texas deatchmatches isn't that he's dangerous when he's angriest; his strength is that he absolutely will not give up, and somewhere in that refusal to quit he taps into his anger and he comes back hard. In a standard match, that anger doesn't really come into play because he's not fighting in a broken ring or going to be wrapping his arm up in barbed wire. That said, I think we're going to see an early match story centered entirely on "Hangman is angry, Punk is exploiting him and wrestling him down to the mat because he's getting sloppy", because the technician exploiting a hothead is a pretty stock wrestling match story.

Is Page close with Colt Cabana off-screen or is that relationship purely kayfabe/Dark Order stuff? Because that's the only thing I can think of that Page would legit be pissed off with Punk about like Meltzer said and make sense with his "workers rights" line, like you waltz in and because you're the bigger star suddenly my friend barely gets featured anymore, you avoid even walking down the same corridors as him and you're doing petty shit like posting old photos with him cropped out.

That was the promo equivalent to the vague ranting Facebook post that alludes to things that nobody reading understands.

In addition to what Mothman said, getting someone rattled enough to lose their cool is a pretty tried and true method to get an advantage in a match typically.

Is Meltzer suggesting there's actual heat between the two? Because they seemed pretty friendly on Twitter before this, which is why Hangman suddenly being all GRR PUNK is weird to me.

Feels weird that this is being said now, that there's backstage heat on Punk. Everything since Punk debuted for AEW last year has suggested he's well-liked and there for the right reasons. At worst, I read reports that Punk has his own dressing room because he likes to keep to himself most of the time, but even then he's been more than happy to help younger talent he's worked with. Now we're meant to believe he has heat?

In kayfabe, he’s angry because … Punk, the challenger, wants to beat him for his title? Doesn’t every challenger want to beat the champ? Didn’t he when he challenged? Doesn’t seem like grudge match, I want to destroy you stuff for a feud. In real life? If Meltzer knows about Punk being disliked backstage or being a disruptive force that’s dividing the locker room or damaging the culture of the promotion with Tony/management doing nothing about it … isn’t that the kind of thing dirtsheets are supposed to report? I mean it wouldn’t be the first ‘so-and-so has NucLEaR HeATzzz!!!’ report we’ve ever heard. If I were paying $11.99 for Dave’s inside info and he’s just making all-of-a-sudden vague references to some kind of friction, I’d be thinking he’s not giving me my money’s worth if he’s not reporting it.

Now we're meant to believe he has heat? And just today Tony did a call promoting the PPV where he talked about how great an asset Punk is not only as a draw but also in working with younger wrestlers and helping them. It feels like Dave’s just trying to read into the promo and help it along by filling in the gaps — ‘well sure it didn’t make sense but it FELT LIKE the old Michaels-Hart days where you have two guys that genuinely hate each other … so treat it like that and you can make sense of it and feel like this is a legit grudge match even though a lot of what Hangman said didn’t really make sense.’

He was vaguely and matter of factly referencing it on WOR, without actually discussing the details, so it has a lot of people confused.

Dave is probably trying to push the backstage stuff just to help add more to the storyline for the smart fans.

Having watched the show, yeah Punk wins, turns heel and we have the third summer of Punk If Punk is going to transcend wrestling and become a major star outside the wrestling bubble, he’s going to have to at some point in his career become more of a man for all seasons. You can’t just be a summer star and not move the needle in fall, winter and spring. And it’s going to take more than a hoodie to get him through the colder months.

If the story they're trying to tell is that Hangman is getting more and more paranoid about everything, then yes... it's a good build
If Punk is somehow supposed to be even remotely heelish in this at all, then it's not. There's not been any solid breadcrumbs of evidence for it.

There's not been any solid breadcrumbs of evidence for it. The breadcrumb for me was last night from Punk. The delivery of 'i'm so happy to be here/all for you fans' etc was just insincere enough for me to buy it. More importantly, the story of Punk being disingenuous, has been all along and is only in it for himself, has been told before in AEW in the Kingston feud. Plus, he's CM Punk, this is kind of his thing.

Kingston, MJF, and now Page are all calling him a fraud. I'd even go as far to say that the Long Island and Kingston feud were previews to who Punk really is. And not to mention Sting trusted him. That's the biggest piece of evidence due to Sting being Wrestling's most gullible man.

Plus, he's CM Punk, this is kind of his thing. Agreed. I saw the promo and that was my first thought with Punk. "I'm grateful to be in the position that I'm in, I love all of you fans across the world" was his exact wording. I know Punk has been a "happy to be here" face since he debuted, but something about that line on Wednesday felt so random that I think it's leading to something. I actually think they should have revisited the Kingston feud and had Punk turn heel then, as the Kingston/Punk feud is basically the Cena/Punk feud with Punk's role reversed, so it would have been the easiest way to pull it off. Either way, I think the Punk turn is coming. I kind of prefer him as a face, but I think even he is itching to turn at this point.

If Punk does turn heel I really hope he does something new with it. I consistently find Punk pretty unwatchable as a heel because the guy tends to go so overboard on trying to be the worst human being ever that he forgets to actually be entertaining.

Thats a good point, the whole 'f*** long island, you don't like me so I'm going to troll you' would be a factor as well. But, on another point, we did this whole dance with Cody way back when so I'm not counting my eggs this time.
