It seems by the way Cody's MITB promo went, that there are no plans to split the WWE and Universal Championships again. Hypothetically, Lashley takes the WWE championship of Roman and Cody down the line wins the Universal Championship, would that be adequate to what his end has been? Or does he NEED the WWE championship with its history and lineage, to be the specific championship he wins, not just one of the top championships?

It has to be the WWE Championship.

I feel like it's much more likely he wins the WWE title. I could maybe see Roman losing the WWE title to someone and then winning it back, only to lose to Cody, and keep pumping the numbers on his ridiculous Universal title reign, sure, but if they have any faith the Rock match would happen, they're not going to touch that one. Additionally, Cody would likely be far more interested in winning the title that was a thing when Dusty was wrestling, since otherwise, it'd be a weird premise.

I'm afraid it probably will have to be. Vince seems dead set on having Rock vs Roman at 'Mania, & I don't see him dropping both straps before then.

I'm afraid it probably will have to be. Vince seems dead set on having Rock vs Roman at 'Mania, & I don't see him dropping both straps before then. If Roman drops one of the titles before Wrestlemania it makes sense for it to be the WWE title. The Universal title is the one he's held the whole time so as long as he still has that one he can go into the Rock match defending a title he's held for over 2 years while Cody wins the WWE title from Seth or someone else. Cody has to win the WWE title. That's the title he spoke about in his first promo back, the one with all the history and the one his Dad challenged for, won by count-out but failed to win. What I would do is have Drew beat Roman for the WWE title at Clash at the Castle (come up with some storyline reason like Roman being a diva and only agreeing to defend one title at a time), Drew drops it to Seth later in the year then Cody returns, wins the Rumble and beats Seth for the title at Wrestlemania. And Roman keeps the Universal title, beats Rock at Wrestlemania then his super long reign ends at Summerslam 3 years to the day he won it against whoever they want to give a massive rub to at that point (Bron Breakker?). That seems like win/win for everyone. The big Roman/Rock match happens. Drew and Cody both get massive moments. Seth gets a title run which he deserves for his great work lately. And someone gets the big win over Roman for the Universal.

I still think, maybe foolishly, that Roman will lose the WWE title to Drew at the UK PLE.
I then expect Drew to drop it to Seth at some point, then Cody wins the Rumble to face Seth 'one last time' as the other 'Mania main event.
I absolutely agree Roman keeps the Universal title until he faces Rock - but I expect WWE to have Rock win that.

Think it probably has to be the WWE title. I mean I hope that means Roman isn’t going to hold the belts until he’s back but I think he more than likely will (he will at least have one if he loses to Drew in Cardiff).
I guess Cody doesn’t need to beat Roman necessarily but it’s the big money match.

Cody's big motivation is to win the one title that evaded his father's grasp. That's the WWE Championship. The Universal Championship lacks the emotional weight for Cody and his story that the WWE Championship has.

I mean, kayfabe... shouldn't it be?
I would laugh though if Cody won the title and as soon as he was handed the belt, he acts disappointed.
He then grabs the microphone and says "That's it? That's all I get?"
*attacks Ref*
Heel turn cemented...not that anyone asked for it.
You know the more I think about it, that's not a bad gimmick...just someone who is never satisfied with anything they achieve. If anything it leads to them being more disappointed, yet driven to try to reverse the feeling, despite never being able to.

The Universal Championship lacks the emotional weight for Cody and his story that the WWE Championship has. Yeah, if it was just about winning a world title at all, he's already done that multiple times elsewhere, including winning the NWA World Heavyweight Title like his dad did. The Universal Title wouldn't really be an emotional payoff to the story.
