The bad things about the Casino Battle Royal were how few "serious" competitors there were and the sloppy camera work and other production slip ups. But a lot of the points made in the article felt like real stretches. Or trying to make the intentionally silly feel like it wasn't.
There were a lot better choices for AEW's first wrestlecrap entry. The Nightmare Collective, Cody vs Ogogo feud (especially the weigh in segment), even the original presentation of the Dark Order. This feels like it was grasping at straws.

One more thing : Uhh…no, Jericho vs Omega was determining that in the Main Event of the show it was hyping up. If the writer actually just watched it recently to critique it, I know they mentioned that fact multiple times over the whole match. Isn’t that true, though? The winner of the battle royal would face the winner of Omega-Jericho?

Meh.
I mean it wasn't good, was it.
Bit harsh to label it Wrestlecrap, though.

The Ogogo/Cody weigh in would've also worker. Especially since we saw it play out backstage as well in Rhodes to the Top.

It wasn't great. I can see why it was picked. I would have gone with Nightmare collective personally.
I'll also mention the odd choice of taking a pot shot at Acey's weight (BTW he lost 100 pounds last I heard)

Wrestlecrap is still a thing? Huh. The site strayed a long time ago. 90% of their inductions are just them being miserable pricks

Yeah…this article was definitely written by someone who clearly has a disdain for AEW. None of the “jokes” landed, tons of liberties skipping the good parts of the match, an unnecessarily long running obsession with Dustin Thomas (we get it, he’s an amputee…). Also, this was literally the very first match of the promotion. Yeah, the camera work was goofy as all hell, but the match itself told a story and still had some absolutely great character-making moments for guys like Luchasaurus, Orange Cassidy (seriously, this was the first exposure of him for the vast majority of us), MJF, and ESPECIALLY Adam Page. I dunno, maybe I’ve outgrown WrestleCrap and it’s frankly horrid takes, but there are dozens of other examples from AEW I’d put in before this, the biggest offenders already being mentioned. It feels a bit like Cinema Sins or whatever, where 95% of their complaints are just hyperbolic nonsense in order to fill content. I’ve also outgrown the need for overly cynical, bad faith takes passing as legitimate entertainment analysis.

Also the fat shaming of Acey Romero is kinda gross.

The choice of this match really drives in that there's more of a desire to dunk on AEW than to memorialize something truly dumb. Like...mediocrity happens in wrestling, and it's not actually inherently funny, and if you want to make fun of AEW for something, there are some really solid ill-conceived tire fires to pick from. Which doesn't surprise me given I remember back in the day how RD would talk about ROH as if it were some kind of weird thing that was only watched by people who live on the moon, and seeing a lack of change in the site's general vibe going in to the modern day when I can listen to podcasts where voice actors and TV writers seem to know more about indy wrestling and joshi than I do.

Who was and what happened to the Sunny Daze guy?
Also Glacier having a freezing mist move is actually kind of genius.

I feel that WrestleCrap turned with this one article they did that spent pretty much the entire time crapping on Colt Cabana winning the NWA World Title. Like, the "joke" was that Colt was such a terrible wrestler that the belt was now essentially worthless. The entire thing just felt really bitter in a way that the site previously hadn't.

Kinda reminds me about how much the Casino Battle Royal was just about Tony Khan seeing a bunch of indie wrestling over the prior few months and deciding to give people a shot. Good example of this was Glacier, who at the time wasn't really a nostalgia act as much as he was all over the place on indies doing fun little matches. Should you have had this sort of battle royal with the winner determining a title shot? Probably not but it was a fun little opener.

It's kind of possible to imagine how that would look now, because the early Dynamite top heel Jericho, Kenny's broken ace story running through into his Moxley feud and his heel turn for the title, and Hangman's whole everything, all feel like such integral pieces to AEW and the stories it's told that this one change ended up completely altering the course of its entire fictional world.
