Which is so weird when you look at any other sport and see how important officials are to a game and what their calls can do for a game. And wrestling, WWE in particular, not doing that just feels weird in the storytelling sense of how they are. I mean Andre winning the title was centered around the referee.. and the weird Dave/Earl switch job ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) besides that Nick Patrick vs. Earl Hebner during the Invasion was a selling point... even though it was clearly neither of them were going to have a great match... Bryce on the Indies was a character everywhere which is kinda how he ended up in AEW, Aubrey in AEW, Red Shoes in Japan, every promotion has had referees with personalities and stories behind them... so Vince randomly deciding that they should be phantom stage hands makes no sense. Slick Johnson in TNA and WCW, Charles Robinson in WCW and WWE, Niall “Foxy” Fox is as much a part of Irish wrestling as anyone else, I can go on. Just randomly taking away a storyline aspect for things in a company reliant on storylines is…it’s a choice.

It was so weird seeing Little "naitch" being referred to as the "referee" on a recent Smackdown during that Charlotte Segment I think? especially knowing his history with WCW and WWE.

To add to that, I once went to a Guerilla show where Knox reffed every. Single. Match. Dude got a standing ovation at the end of that VERY long night.

Oh yeah, refs can be cardio machines, often by necessity if hardly anyone is around who can do it.

WWE refs aren't even allowed to have names. You think they'd ever get acknowledged with a HOF induction?

Unsurprising a lot of refs are former wrestlers or otherwise athletic, like Aubrey Edwards formerly was a ballet dancer for about 20 years.

I read Jimmy Korderas' book, it had some good stuff in it, but really nothing rising above mildly interesting, you'd think the guy would be bursting with stories, but not so much. It's still worth checking out if you can get it on the cheap.
The Warrior Award should be for what Warrior said there should be an award for, but you get more press for putting a small deceased child in than you do the woman who sewed all that kick-ass ring gear for you, so that ain't happening anytime soon.

I'm fairly sure Knox's only athletic credentials are being an OG Orange County punk rocker in the early 80's. Those pits were intense from what I've heard, and dude has stories and pictures for days.

"The following contest is scheduled for one fall! Your referee is Rick Knox!" "WE KNOW!!!!!!" I went to a show once and I don't know exactly what happened, but I think one of the boys had to referee all the matches or was very new to to being a ref and was already announced for the evening as being the only one...he made a couple very visible mistakes of being out of position and f***ed up a finish, so someone cat called him from the crowd, he put on a sad face and said "I'm trying my best!". Was pretty funny. The ref was clearly having fun anyway and there's only like 50 or so people there, so everyone was part of the fun, but it was the only part of the show I remember.

I'm perfectly fine with them honoring children who have gone through illness, especially if it can be used to raise money or awareness for child cancer or other things. There should also be a separate award for backstage folks and referees.
Neither should be called the Warrior Award.

WWE wants to dilute everyones star power. No one is bigger than the brand. So of course they dont want refs to become anything more than living props. Then they can be replaced before they want more money. Its the same as their plan for wrestlers with the new NXT.
Vince also probably has some resentment because of Earl and Brians betrayal.

Hell, WWE was just doing Scott Armstrong as The Authority's on-the-take referee six years ago. The fact that they have room for the likes of Drew Carey, Kid Rock, and [REDACTED], but not any referees or backstage personnel or even ring announcers (besides Howard Finkel) just feels wrong.

That was kind of my first thought before I even entered the thread. If there was a section for referees in the WWE Hall of Fame, it would only be a matter of time before people started suggesting Earl Hebner get nominated, and I just can't see that happening in Vince's lifetime.

I think if Earl Hebner was on good terms with the company he would be inducted. I have noticed they have mentioned one of the female refs by name recently, not sure if that will progress onto mentioning all the refs by name any time soon, one can hope.

Anyone else remember when the refs were on the roster page?

Vince decided at one point that refs shouldn't be seen basically... despite them being part of the drama... Which is so weird when you look at any other sport and see how important officials are to a game and what their calls can do for a game. And wrestling, WWE in particular, not doing that just feels weird in the storytelling sense of how they are. How many officials make it into the NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB HOF though? Commissioners usually but not referees/umpires

Commissioners usually but not referees/umpires Well, none, but then the relationship between pro wrestling referees and every other referee, or even any other personality that doesn’t usually wrestle, is dramatically different. You’re not going to find Mino Raiola in the Soccer/Football HOF but Teddy Long, Mr. Fuji and Captain Lou Albano are in the WWE HOF.
