First off John Stockton can kick rocks Secondly, Malone was still an effective player wanted a ring. In theory, they had what it took to win by Pistons were more hungry and put the beats on them For still being an effective player, he sure did run out of gas after only one year. Sounds like a guy that would do anything to win a ring, so he upped and went to a new team and when that didn’t work, retired one year later. Reeked of desperation. Don’t know what your issue is with John Stockton though. Because he was desperate for a ring 20 years after being in the league. I see nothing wrong with that Also read up on Stockton and you will see why. Tho Malone is a creep tho so either way don't really care about either but in general I think after 20 years on a team you can do what you want

At least when Shaq left the Lakers he still won another Championship with The Heat. But yeah the Celtics year was... well he was out of gas really. Shaq was ring chasing to catch Kobe as he said so himself Shaq really doesn't fit this question since he left Orlando and got rings with LA and left them to get a ring with Miami. By this point he was just there. Phx went from fast pace to really slow for him, he went to the Cavs "to win a ring for the King" and that didn't work and he thought Boston was going help him win a ring to get 5 and that didn't happen

Did a quick google, vaccines came up, shame, as a kid in the UK, loved him and Malone, wanted the Jazz to get at least 1 title against the Bulls

Main one I can think of is Albert Pujols leaving Cardinals after winning 2nd World Series with them and going to Angels in 2012. From what I hear he never showed the same performance like he did for 11 seasons in St. Louis. Now he is back for his last season here.

You could argue that his stints with the White Sox and Dodgers were an unnecessary extension of a great career that could and should have ended in Boston, but this absolutely never needed to happen: For some NFL flavor, I offer (this is more of a "should have never returned after 4 years away"):

People in Boston usually like the "leave everything on the field/court/ice" players, but Manny was as popular an athlete here as you'll ever see and he was certainly not that guy. Should have retired with the Sox though.

The two that killed me the most were Thurman Thomas on the Dolphins and Mats Sundin on the Canucks.
