Perhaps they are sometimes, but every time I've seen such a match it's been under those weird tag-an-opponent rules. Just comes off as convoluted and kind of lame imo

Makes it easier to pace a match. Triple threat matches often have to have one guy taken out for a period of time so the other two can fight. That becomes harder to do when that guy has a partner to replace or revive him. It also opens up more combinations of opponents.
