If you wanna take it to Arquette level that's fine but they are in reality doing a lot of things they ripped WCW for doing...the mainevent scene is aging part timers as they can't seem to get any one else to that level..sounds familiar.
Trying to pop ratings with celebs and sports stars also sounds familiar.

He could have been a failure of an experiment, but the dude has a passion for Wrestling that shows in every aspect of what he does. This was a no brainer and the absolute right thing to do

As to your first point, I dont even disagree, but it's a different point to the point of this thread or the point we were talking about.

The big difference you're glossing over is that said celebs and sports stars have all come in, busted their asses and made fans WANT to see them again.

I have nothing against Pat McAfee but this is the kinda stuff that is wrong with today's WWE. Extending their very good color commentator?

I was worried for a sec when I saw his photo pop up on my Instagram feed. Awesome news! Love Pat & his passion for the business. Along with Cody, the best signing for years!! Can’t believe I am saying this but he has actually made Michael Cole bearable on commentary 😀👏 There's an episode of Smackdown, where he says he's 35 years old. I figured I would see if I was older than him... We have the same exact birthday lol 🤣

I remember the Wrestlemania pre-show when he was wearing the shorts, thinking "who is this annoying douchebag?" Now a couple years later I love him.
I'm also shocked he's only been announcing since April 2021. I thought it was way longer than that. He got good so quick.

But why does it matter? If that doesnt interest you, you can move on to watch a programme that features the people WWE either had and let go, or never had cos they feel similar and didnt want to go there. Because WWE is doing this, and now letting that talent get out there rather than hoarding, people can pick and choose, or just find things to enjoy about it all. And let's face it, from celebs in the Rock and Wrestling era, to Pamela Anderson and Mike Tyson through to Floyd Mayweather and now this lot, WWE has always loved themselves a celebrity attraction. It's not new, and again, at leas this recent crop want to actually DO IT. They arent just there for pay day. Some of them may even stick around, like McAfee has. I find it kinda funny they are largely becoming what they ripped WCW for...but hey to each their own. Except, they know how to actually do it CORRECTLY. WCW famously didn’t know how to actually make celebrity involvement work. Ernest Miller kept promising than he would get James Brown to show up, went on for weeks, then one PPV James Brown showed up, unadvertised and it was basically never mentioned again, like it never happened. Bobby Heenan talked about how one time Goldberg went to hang out with Mark McGwire during the home run battle, and WCW didn’t even bother to do anything with it, while WWE would have gotten a pretty fun segment out of it, had them socking dingers, send them to go pick out bats, things like that. Knoxville, Bad Bunny, yes, even Logan Paul, all those worked.

Tell me this sounds like a recipe for long term success. Well... ...if it's worked for 40 years on these one-off appearances, I don't see how offering a contract extension to someone who has been a weekly fixture for the company for over four years is somehow detrimental to the current product.

He's probably the best commentator they've got right now. He makes everything seem like its the most exciting possible event to ever happen.
Liv Morgan pins Carmella, who never wins? "OH MY GOD! COLE! LIV MORGAN BEAT A FORMER CHAMPION, THIS IS THE STUFF THAT CHANGES YOUR CAREER FOR THE BETTER! OH MAN! I'M SO HAPPY WE GOT TO SEE THIS LIVE ON SMACKDOWN!" And make it sound like he legit means it. Because he sounds like he probably does. He loves wrestling. We need more of this in the WWE commentary world.

Knoxville, Bad Bunny, yes, even Logan Paul, all those worked. You didn't even list the worst WCW examples. Putting the world title on David Arquette and Jay Leno main eventing a PPV. What would be the 2022 equivalent of these? Shia Labeouf winning the WWE title and Jimmy Fallon main eventing Summerslam? Then there was a high as a kite Dennis Rodman wrestling and putting himself and his opponents safety at risk. Having a Robocop appearance and trying to play it off seriously. The KISS Demon stuff if that counts. Outside of that atrocious 2009 guest host era of Raw WWE is generally great with celebrities. Lauper. Mr. T. LT. Pete Rose. Tyson. That guy who was president. Mayweather. Amell. Rousey. McAfee. Bad Bunny. Knoxville. Hell, Kevin Federline was entertaining when by all rights that should have been a disaster. Same with Snooki.

Great news, Pat's very energetic and cares about the product.
I didn't like him at first but he's grown on me over time.

Love the guy. I’d put Cole and Pat right up there with teams like JR and King at this point. Heenan and Gorilla too, why not? All these duos loved working together and it shows through the product. You can hear it and feel it. Cole is the first to admit he was phoning it in a lot before Pat. The two click and are genuine great friends and there’s a deep amount of respect there. I wanted Cole off commentary for years but why would I now when this team is this f***ing good?

Love this for Pat. Been telling y’all since he was doing NXT for pre show that he was going to be good for the product. He’s been doing this for the love of the game and is now getting paid good money for it. I don’t see how this can be hated on. You need more people like him who loves it and isn’t a problem. He’s living a dream for himself somehow even bigger than being in the NFL

Signing him to an extension is an easy choice. He makes Smackdown a better show on commentary. He puts everyone over and makes everything seem important. He does the same thing on his show as well. He's booked very well right now as a babyface when it comes to getting in the ring. I see the point that they could and should have treated many talents better, and it stings when it's a guy who isn't a full time wrestler getting a big extension- but I really can't imagine them not locking him up right now. If he had slipped out there as a free agent, he'd be on Wednesday nights immediately.
