First time I've watched the match and...yeesh, even for 1986 this is pretty rough. I know a lot of people built this up as being a good match, and maybe by Tom Magee standards it is, but by Bret Hart standards it's not good at all.
Tom has absolutely no psychology and doesn't know how to play to the crowd whatsoever. Yes, his wrestling is terrible, but if there is anything worse than bad wrestling, it's standing there awkwardly not knowing what to do.
I did like the cartwheel into the backflip though.

That's it? It's a nice, safe match, but I don't think it's warranted the mythical hype it's gotten over the years.
Magee has something like three moves; Armdrag, Dropkick and Roll-up variations. Oh, and he does do a nice-looking Sunset Flip and some for his size impressive looking flips and cartwheels. I get that he was super green, and Bret led him through, which is the heel's job anyway, but how Vince thought he was the next big thing, yeah...
A cool piece of history either way.

It's a telling sign of how just how bad McGee was when a match this basic is what supposedly got him hyped up by the likes of Vince. The cartwheels and backflips are a novelty, but even in a bout designed to make him look good, in terms of actual offense, he doesn't come off as doing really anything that a Jim Powers couldn't do.

Wasn't the full one on the Network?

Wasn't the full one on the Network? No, they started the match a couple minutes in. I haven't seen it since the night it debuted, but it started somewhere around McGee's backflip into the corner, as I recall.

You also have to put into context exactly what the standard was when they was taped. Like, Steamboat-Savage at Mania III still hadn't happened yet. This was lightyears ahead of televised WWF wrestling in its era.

After learning about this match years ago, I have always wanted to watch it. I finally have, and...I liked it! If I watched this match back then, I wouldn't have been able to tell how inexperienced Tom McGee was. Bret Hart made him look like a million bucks! For me, the match lived up to the hype!

I thought it was a good match, probably would've been better if McGee had a power finisher like a powerslam to beat Bret.
Bret can make someone look like a million bucks effortlessly, though I don't know if I would called McGee the next Hulk.

Also, the instagram recording doesn't capture the crowd as much as the one that aired on the network did. The HUGE reaction for everything Magee did from the crowd is really what cements Vince as seeing Tom like the next Hulk.

I know some shows were edited to avoid actually showing him.
