They say only 1% of the audience get shoot comments that make it to wrestling shows. Are they right? Let's think of some examples.
I am sure the king of this trope is "Forgot your scissors, Sid?" Which I think only the announcers sold on the reboot Nitro.

Yeah, that was the first thing that came to mind for me.
I remember Shane Douglas in late WCW saying, “…‘cause this is a shoot!,” and no one giving a shit. I can’t even remember what he went on to say.

Max Caster rapping "we selling more in New York than New York"
I didn't understand it all until I started reading the Reddit comments.

Max Caster rapping "we selling more in New York than New York" I didn't understand it all until I started reading the Reddit comments. That one's so funny to me, because calling WWE things like "New York" or "Up North" sounds so 1980's to me. It would be like calling them "The Federation"

"Oklahoma" being a pretty gross parody of Jim Ross right down to the Bells Palsy.
IIRC the crowd barely reacted and everyone but Russo and Ferrara hated it. Though that could apply to a lot of shit from WCW in late 1999 and 2000.
I wish I could say the Voodoo Kin Mafia and how cringe everything about it was. But IIRC the Impact Zone crowd actually ate it up. Granted they were probably the only ones.

This isn't CM Punk talking to Triple H. This is Phil Brooks talking to Paul Levesque.
Nothing can beat the Bischoff scissors one though because he said it twice which made it even funnier. It's like he thought the lack of reaction the first time was due to people not hearing him clearly or something so he tried again but again fans were silent.

My mind wants to fade back to a lot of the exchanges between Reigns/Cena. I recall their promos getting some reaction, but a lot of their verbiage was virtually incoherent, especially Cena's - had next to no idea what he was talking about when he said Reigns ran Dean Ambrose out of WWE and I don't recall the audience being in on it all that much either.

DX were the kings of these comments.
"Hickenbotton?!"
"Return to OVW"
"Someone already did that in seg 7"
"HORSE AROUND!"
"Whoever the father of that baby is"
We could probably make a list of just their inside comments that they made on tv that most people didn't get.

What's the one where Cornette said there's a job to do in the next town and he was going to make sure the job was going to get done? Something along those lines.

On Starrcade 95, Tony said something about someone wrestling something in the Smoky Mountains, Heenan said something along the lines of "No one wrestles in the Smoky Mountains." This was like a month after SMW shut down.

I saw the thread title and instantly thought of the scissors comment!

The scissors one is the absolute funniest due to the complete confusion/apathy from the crowd, plus didn't Bischoff say it twice, too? Like just to try again cause the audience didn't seem to understand.

Not an insider jab but DDP saying "Hollywood SCUM Hogan" like it was the coolest thing ever, only for it to get met with dead silence every time always makes me laugh.

I always enjoyed Ventura being extra rough on Joey Marella, "That idiot can't even count to three" while calling matches with Gorilla.

It sounded like a goody two-shoes protagonist quote about a villain in a cartoon with the protagonist ironically looking like he regularly gets into bar fights, which made those moments even funnier.

Bulldog trying to get Gameboy over as taunt for Triple H was pretty painful too. Ditto for Heenan calling the NWO the “new world odor”…. Like, you’re really surprised people are cheering for the heels with the brutal insults when that’s your comeback?

Not WWE but MJF's "pipebomb" when he was saying stuff like "Is it because I wrestle safely and don't do head drops?" was absolutely painful and sums up basically everything I hate in my wrestling. Like, WHY would he wrestle "safely" in kayfabe? It makes absolutely no sense that he wouldn't want to hurt his opponent as much as possible.
Any comment that basically says "They're holding me back and forcing me to lose!", I just cannot stand. It's even worse when it's some loser who's lost like 30 matches in a row doing it.
Sure it gets a reaction from the smarks but to the casuals? They couldn't give a shit about it. These worked shoot promos cater to a very small niche. Casual fans just want entertaining characters, good stories and cool gimmicks. They don't give a f*** about your "5 star Meltzer classics" and your "insider terms"

He liked doing that kind of thing, I forget the specifics, but he also said once the Midnight Express could go east or west, "Why, we could even go North!"
