Am I the only one who thinks they could have taken the Vaudevillans gimmick in a different direction. I mean, you had guys who looked like they stepped out of the 1920s, but then they wrestled like modern day wrestlers. It could have been a neat nod to their gimmick if they wrestled in a 1920s style. Granted, I dont mean 5 hour Jim Londos style matches, but more basic but still sensible technical moves. Would have served as a nice clash of styles to the flashier NXT teams.

They had a ton of potential, but Simon Gotch seemingly kept stepping in it with everyone.

Was always a big fan of them in NXT and in their initial main roster push but always felt the gimmick was underdone and wasn’t gonna be fully understood by Vince/creative. English and Gotch are good performers in the ring as a team as well as individuals but there was always a ceiling for them unfortunately. There was also the whole Gotch having backstage heat thing which didn’t help as well as the Payback 2016 incident with Enzo.

I loved Gotch's old timey strong man gimmick... and when Aiden English would cut a promo with an old time megaphone.
When they got to the main roster I think a lot of their schtick got cut, and I'm not sure Vince got the idea either.
Gotch though was apparently a bit of a prick backstage from what people have said too.

He really has no ground to talk... like I can think of way more VV matches than I can Enzo Amore matches... Enzo literally was all talk.

If you listen to Simon Gotch (dangerous on itself) they were thrown together to see if it could work since Aiden English was struggling to get over and Gotch wasn't really impressing on the Florida loop. They got over, were recommended to go up since WWE wanted tag teams to get ready for brand split, Vince loved them one Friday and immediately lost interest in them over the weekend.

Matt's at least a pretty good commentator. Remember when he was the Wade Barrett of 205 Live, thirsting for Humberto?

They never got a chance.
They were off NXT for quite a while, and when they were last seen, they were faces. Then, they debut on Smackdown (the kiss of death) as heels with no fanfare.
Then Enzo injures himself (Simon Gotch was not at fault at all for that) and they just kinda phased out of the picture.

Weird to hear that English’s singles gimmick wasn’t getting over, because it had a pretty solid Full Sail following and a lot of fun quirks to it (him singing his entrance and outro, the roses being thrown into the ring after he won).

Yeah, Aiden was legitimately over in the singing "artiste" gimmick. I recall on Twitter that Gotch said prior to them being paired that Aiden was told to cut the singing due to fear of having to pay royalties for the songs he parodied (hence why almost all of his entrances from that period were edited off when the NXT back catalog finally showed up on The Network) so Gotch must be referring to that period where Aiden was forced to go without the singing.

I am sure deep down Simon Gotch is a good person, but when you vent your grievances so loudly, it just makes you look bitter and bad.

Yeah, on NXT they had way more presentation and way more of the gimmick elements that OP is talking about, but of course main roster happens, everything is a Vince idea, and of course the guy who gets self-conscious about his show having numbers on it isn't going to want to run any kind of silly early 20th century touches to add to the act.

Was Enzo holding his breath when he said all this?
