There's all this speculation about the Rock returning at either Wrestlemania 39 or 40 to challenge Roman. With that being said, the question gets asked is if Roman will hold the title until this match. Then it got me thinking, if and when that match occurs, it's an easy main event/last match on Night 2 that doesn't need to revolve around the title. You have the battle of the Anoa'i family to determine who is the true tribal chief. That's all you need.
Let's say the match is slated for WM 39. Roman could easily lose to Draw at Clash at the Castle, take time off TV for a few months, then return around Mania and be just as strong.
Plus, at this point, what would be the purpose of the Rock chasing the title? Let's say he wins. He's just going to be an absentee champion, or he will just vacate it the next night.

I’m not completely against it I just don’t need him to hold it until Mania. Lose to Drew at The Clash then win it back at Royal Rumble if you absolutely have to have it be for the belt.

Here's the thing.
If Roman DOES have the title, it will be almost three years at that point.
Does he lose it to The Rock?
That seems like a massive waste to me.
You'd almost have to have Roman beat Rock.

It doesn't need it but WWE always like to add more pressure to matches like that outside of the first Rock/Cena match which they then proceeded to do for the title next year

I think it not being for the title would be a way to make it more up in the air as to who would win, otherwise I would assume Roman wins. It is also a clear headliner for one night and allows for a better top men's title match for another night particularly if there is still only one unified champ. I'm not sure if there is a women's match out there now worthy of headlining a night.

I’m hoping for Cody and Drew to be in the title mix for Mania 39, so no it doesn’t. Rock/Cena 2 having the belt didn’t hurt but Rock/Cena 1 broke records the first time without it.
A sweet climax would be Cody taking a belt from Roman on Night One and then Roman gets some mojo back by beating Dwayne on Night Two.
Especially if Drew wins at the Castle. Now going into that second night Roman’s lost both championships and feels he’s losing his grip on power, now he’s *got* to take Dwayne out and prove he’s boss.

I honestly don't know what to think anymore. It feels like a moment as big as Roman being pinned for the first time in years is something you do at Mania. I also get why Roman/Rock doesn't need a belt.
Here's my quickly written way to get them where they want to go:
1. Drew beats Roman at Clash after some Sami/Usos shenanigans go sideways.
2. Roman goes into hiding for a few months, nobody knows where he's gone.
3. Drew vs. Sami Zayn in October at Extreme Rules for the Undisputed WWE Universal Title.
4. Drew vs. Karrion Kross vs. Seth Rollins in a 2 fall triple threat match for the WWE and WWE Universal Titles at Survivor Series. Seth manages to steal back the WWE Title and brings it to RAW after Drew retains the Universal Title in the first fall.
5. Drew beats Karrion Kross at WWE Day 1 in January.
6. Roman emerges and announces he's entering the Rumble. Final Four is Sami, KO, Cody and Roman. Roman demands that Sami eliminates his friend KO. Sami says no. KO and Sami fight back against Roman but he eliminates them both. Cody eliminates Roman and wins the Rumble.
7. Roman comes out the night after Rumble and says he's still the head of the table and will prove it by challenging Rock for Mania. Uso's and KO/Sami get into a rivalry as well.
8. Night 1 of Mania: Seth vs. Cody for the WWE Title, Night 2: Roman vs. Rock, Drew McIntyre vs. Gunther for the Universal Title, KO and Sami vs. Usos for Undisputed WWE Tag Titles

Plus, the angle of Dwayne trying to get the Usos to stop taking Roman’s shit (which would require the Usos losing the belts and Roman repeatedly abusing them for their failures).

It doesn’t. Roman’s 2.5 year title reign shouldn’t end with The Rock.

Does it even matter who is champion at this point?

Agreed, it's too late. I would've been cool with that at this year's past WM, but now extending it seems wasteful of creating more potential meaningful moments at WM.
I say have Drew beat Roman at Clash in a few weeks, have Drew carry it to Day 1 in Jan, dropping it to Edge and giving him that last short title run he hasn't had yet since he's retiring next year, and then have Edge drop the belt to RR winner Cody at night 1 of Wrestlemania.
That way Rock/Roman still happens as the closing main event of night 2, and you don't have absentee champion BS or some cheap feeling MitB cash-in as Rock's last match.

Thant long-ass reign (no pun intended) only to be ended by the guy who's been retired from wrestling far longer than he ever spent actually wrestling would be so bad it's funny.
I can't see HHH doing that in any reality.
