Absolutely fantastic promo. Like I said in the live thread, Ricky took this opportunity and knocked it out of the goddamn park.
It's too bad his shameful physique and dwarflike height will forever doom both him and AEW as an overall entity. Sure he had the entire arena eating out of the palm of his hand, but think of THE CASUAL FANS.

Something something fans won't care because he's not 6'14" or whatever Dude is amazing and that promo was huge. I doubt he takes the belt, but this is still a huge elevation for him and a promo like that to lock it in can only help cement that fact. He won't be winning the belt yet, but make no mistake about it, if there's anyone you could tout has the potential to be a megastar, it's Ricky Starks.

Ricky annihilating MJF on the mic tonight in a late contender for promo of the year (and got kicked in the balls for his efforts but still he raised his stock significantly tonight) Ricky did get Max with a Spear after the dick kick, so there’s also that.

I've said before, Starks has been ready for this. MJF is usually pretty giving in promos as he wants to get the fans to hate him and cheer the face, but the face still has to produce, and Starks produced big time. He won't win next week, but he's already elevated in the fans' eyes, and a great showing next week could push it over the top.

People were really talking him up a couple of years ago and I didn't quite see it yet. I thought he was good but not THAT good.
He's clearly it right now though and could easily be a long-term top babyface in the company. That promo was fire.
I wouldn't expect him to win but the follow-up is key. At the next PPV a win over a name like Jericho (as long as it doesn't result in the patented Jericho feud that lasts 6 months way too long) would be good to keep the ball rolling. He's beaten guys around his level but to the best of my memory he's never gotten that big statement win over any of the real upper echelon guys.

Yeah he’s surprisingly never really mixed it up in singles competition with any main eventers, bar one match against Hangman. The biggest names he’s beaten are probably Jungle Boy, Archer and Hobbs.

That promo was a case of Tony telling Ricky to take the brass ball and Ricky responding with this is mine now.
He's not winning the AEW title next week, but that cemented Ricky as a top guy

I also have to shoutout MJF for not pulling a "I'm the bigger star so I'm gonna talk over you and get the final word" deal here.

Whenever they give Starks time he seems to do a great job, if Tony really got behind him consistently I think they'd have a main event talent in a year.

Hopefully they give him a very good program after this. They need to keep the momentum on him.

Checked it out on YT, and hell yeah, great promo from Ricky. It won't amount to much after MJF beats him, but glad he called Max out on the same ol same ol, and about going home when he wasn't getting paid enough because someone smarter out-politicked him. Good stuff. Was the "someone smarter out-politicked you" a reference to CM Punk winning the title at Double or Nothing? Cause I remember a theory early in the year being that MJF was gonna challenge Hangman for the title at DoN, but then CM Punk got that spot and MJF got the Wardlow turn instead.

Whenever they give Starks time he seems to do a great job, if Tony really got behind him consistently I think they'd have a main event talent in a year. I'm a little worried that they're gonna make Ricky a main-eventer too late. Like I get this vibe that he's going to win the title / be the guy after other main eventers have left, without really getting big wins over them. Basically it's a WCW 2000 vibe, cause I was watching WCW in 2000 and I remember how most of the main eventers that year hadn't really beaten any of the previous crop of main eventers (except Nash, who actually stuck around). Like Hogan / Macho / Sting etc all kinda left without passing any torches, Booker and Steiner got the title well after they should have and when they lacked major opponents to go over, etc. Dunno, I get this weird feeling the same thing's gonna happen with Ricky and they'll push him too late for it to matter as much. He's a guy they should be building around now and lining up signature wins for. Maybe I'm just paranoid because CM Punk basically left with the title without putting anyone over and the AEW title itself feels a little lesser to me now as a result.

I became sold on Ricky months ago, but goddamn, that was the best babyface promo I've heard all year. If I weren't sold on him before last night, I would've been after that.

I do wonder why you’d let him to cut that incredible promo ahead of a match that he almost certainly won’t win?
Having said that, Ricky is definitely a future top guy if he isn’t one already.

I didn’t get Starks at first, but he’s grown on me…and damn, that was an outstanding promo
Like has been said, he’s not winning next week, but he feels a lot more elevated and will be there soon. Good stuff.

Making it feel like he should have won is probably the best that can be done for someone guaranteed to lose, especially for a first title match. It does get super old once it becomes a pattern, but most things work when they're new for the wrestler in question.
