They came back for pretty much a year or so. Didn't win the tag titles though. Put over younger teams. And then the run was over like that. I believe it was because Bubba wanted to be Bully Ray while D-Von wanted the team to stay together.
All things being equal, if they continued as the Dudley Boyz, did they have more left in them? Put over more tag teams, get a title run, etc.... Or were they just old and it was better WWE moved on to younger tag teams at the time?

I don't think so, I feel like I remember it wearing thin pretty quick. Having it be a complete nostalgia run where they dressed like they did in 2000 and had the 2000 theme was a bad move that made the whole thing look stupid as f***.

Honestly surprised they never got a tag title run on either brand. They really only got a good return pop and lost most of their big matches. I would have done more with them but then again im a big Dudleys fan.

I could be completely wrong on this, but I feel like there was a segment of the audience that was disappointed that when Bubba Ray Dudley returned at the “Royal Rumble” in two-thousand and fifteen that didn’t translate into him getting Bully Ray run.
Not saying he should have gotten a main event, WWE Champion type run out of it, but I could have easily seen him in the midcard title picture feuding with the likes of Kevin Owens, Dean Ambrose, and the like over the United States and Intercontinental Championships.
As for the Dudley Boyz nostalgia run, it served its purpose of making the crowd pop, and getting over up-and-coming tag teams… I mean, it would have been nice if they got one more run with the Tag Team Championships, but the new day were in the middle of their record breaking reign and the finished up before the brand split was brought back.
So, they just never got the Hardy Boyz nostalgia run with the tag titles.

I believe it was because Bubba wanted to be Bully Ray while D-Von wanted the team to stay together. I believe Vince was on board with a Bully Ray solo run, which is why the Dudleys had a bit of a breakup story happening, but then he changed his mind, at which point the Dudleys remembered why they left WWE the first time.

They needed more than nostalgia. They spent time away reinventing themselves and took a step backward when they returned. It's fine for a few months but then you need something else to hook the fans and we never got that.

Like the RVD return it was just them doing the classics over and over. There was nothing fresh, it was just a carbon copy of their old stuff. As such, the shine wore off pretty quick. It needed something beyond wassup and get the tables.

We needed Reverend D-Von to come back. Complete with Deacon Batista returning.

Definitely agree that a straight-up nostalgia run was a waste. We didn't need to see Bully Ray specifically, but both dudes grew so much as performers, and Vince just hit the reset button on them as an act. Which is a consistent Vince issue with nostalgia stuff.

In retrospect, the big problem the Dudleys ended up having was that they returned during the absolute peak of the New Day, having just put in Day 1 of 483 in their iconic second reign with the titles. Somehow, this was the one time Vince didn't not derail a white hot fresh act in favor of nostalgia bait. In addition, there was no brand split for all but the last month of their run. As a result, not only did the Dudleys not win the tag titles, those titles didn't even move at all during their entire one year run.
Had they shown up the year before, they would have been the most over team by a country mile. Had they shown up the next year, they would have either been the team to beat New Day, or anchored the opposite division with a refreshed brand split. Instead, they lost their big title match, and had a half-hearted heel turn and feud with The Usos where they said they weren't going to be a nostalgia act, but didn't change anything at all to not be a nostalgia act anymore.

Nostalgia sells. I never gave a shit about Team 3D, but I loved The Dudleyz. They 100% made the right move in picking up with the most over part of their careers that most of the fanbase was familiar with, the problem was a) It didn't go anywhere during their return and b) as previously noted, they returned during the white hot beginning of The New Day's title run. They made the right call in keeping those belts on The New Day and using The Dudleyz to help the tag division, but it came at the expense of The Dudleyz having any momentum. They not only never won the belts, but they lost to EVERYONE. By the end, D-von wasn't even cutting his sleeves off, and it felt like he was checked out and done while we began hearing rumblings about a possible Bully Ray solo run that never happened.
I am glad they came back and feuded with some modern teams like New Day, The Usos, The Wyatts, etc. It was good to see them have their swan song back in WWE, but I feel like after a year of putting over the entire roster, the only real thing left I would've liked to see is what the Bully Ray character could do down in NXT or the main roster, wherever he'd wind up.

They jobbed way too much which meant they didn't give the rub to younger teams as much as they could have since wins over them didn't mean much. They should have had a short title reign like the New Age Outlaws, but didn't perhaps in part because the WWE wanted New Day to beat the Demolition streak.

Honestly it was worth it for #SaveTheTables which was some of New Day's best material.

Don't try and tell me Bully Ray wrestling Ryback or whatever would have been better than Kofi Kingston talking about how if it wasn't for tables The Last Supper would have been eaten off the floor.

They should've gave Bully Ray a run.

I thought it was one of the most boring nostalgia runs ever, honestly.

Yeah the tag run was bollocks in the end but I have to say that I enjoyed rewatching Bubba returning at the 2015 Rumble, that was the right call. Would have been better if Reverend D'Von was also in it.

As a tag team, nah.
But I still believe the Bully Ray character had a whole strong ass mid-card career to be had in WWE.

The ECW VS The Wyatt Family match at TLC is a bit of a hidden gem.
