When it comes to Pro Wrestling there has always been a Top 3 U.S. Promotions : WWF, NWA, and AWA in the 80s. WWF, WCW, and ECW in the 90s. WWE, TNA, and ROH in the 2000s and the 2010s. AEW, WWE, and Impact in the 2020s. May 29th 2022, CM Punk became the first wrestler to have won World Titles in 3 separate US promotions (ROH, WWE, and AEW). I just realized that today

Putting ROH in there is kind of a stretch?
First tier wrestling in US would be WWE, WCW, AEW
Second tier ECW, TNA

It is kind of amazing that we've never had someone who won world titles in WWE, WCW, & Impact (barring Invasion era Kurt Angle briefly having the Big Gold Belt). You'd think that would have happened in some fashion, but no.

I have nothing to add other than I'm glad Mox doesn't have the shortest reign anymore.

ROH at its highest was at least on the same level as TNA and pre-WWE ECW. All In and the MSG shows selling as well as they did also paved the way for AEW.
Only thing they really missed was a major TV deal. But the numbers between all their syndicated airings were actually pretty respectable.

I definitely would say that but I'd also say that was equally due to the fall of TNA as it was the rise of ROH. I'd also add Sting as someone who had a chance to win the title in WCW, TBA, and WWE even if it was pretty unlikely he would win in WWE.

Right, but that would be close to 15 years after Punk won it, so it's not like he was on top of a top company. And ECW in the 90's? Oooookay. I know this is a retroactive point where everyone and their dog knew about ECW, but I knew a ton of people who were big into wrestling who had no idea what ECW was during this time, and didn't care. The vast majority of people who enjoyed wrestling even into the Monday Night Wars did not watch one minute of ECW and likely were only familiar to it through references on the shows they actually watched. I would be surprised if they received a 1% share of viewers between the years of 1993 and 2001. A distant distant third place, which is why once they got an actual TV deal on TNN, ECW at their best never even got half the viewers that WCW got at their worst.

The (partially WWE-propped up) legend and mythos of ECW was way bigger than ECW ever was as an independent company. Outside of a very short-lived basic cable show and a couple of crappy video games, they were way more on the scale of an ROH than WWF or WCW.
They were the default #3 US promotion in the 90s but it was a huge drop from #2.

If you extend it to NXT Joe has WWE, ROH, and Impact.

They cleared more TV accessibility, more (and higher) live gates and at least as much overall presence as either ECW or TNA did at their absolute peaks.

It did have a level of infamy around it, like I remember kids on the playground thinking it was where "they fight for real", etc, but it didn't necessarily translate into big viewership/sale numbers. They did get the video games, but that was luck on their part as much as anything else, with Acclaim wanting to milk their Warzone/Attitude engine for a few more games while they still could.

Savage, Nash, Hogan, and Booker T had a shot. None of them held the main TNA title ever though. And Jarrett never had the WWE belt. Surprisingly enough, Jeff Jarrett never held the TNA World Heavyweight Championship. He held the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship multiple times, but when TNA’s agreement with the NWA ended and they established their own championships, he never actually won Total Nonstop Action’s top championship. With that said, there’s still time for CM Punk to win the Impact World Heavyweight Championship before adding burning a bridge with them to his bridge burning bucket list.
