I was about 10/11 when first MK came out on the arcades and first played it at the bowling alley I used to bowl at as a kid (they had a wide variety of games over the years I used to play there including Street Fighter 2, Simpsons, and CrusinUSA).
For cheat codes/how to get special moves and fatalities back in the day, I remember paying the game magazines like "GamePro" where they would saw the codes and give tips to all the new games back then.

First MK experience, so far as I can remember, was picking up a second hand SNES through the Yellow Pages, and just as we got there to pick it up the people selling it had completed a run of MK1. Got the first two games with it, and later picked up the others gradually. Played a lot more 4 than 3 despite its bad rep just because the AI in the 2D games was stupidly cheap back then and I didn't fully get the hang of running and combos as a kid. Also I've been a big fan of the modern trilogy, but yeah, the story pivoting away from everything they built up across 9/X by just handwaving Dark Raiden away like "Oh yeah, we're done with him now, we can give his plot beats to the other Raiden who hasn't even done anything that wrong yet". I have many headcanons about where the story could have gone without Kronika's plot changing everything up. I reckon you could do some fun stuff with the new gen of characters ending up on differing sides of whether to trust Raiden and his more aggressive stance, whether siding with Outworld's more tempered voices might be the right thing to do, with the Netherrealm stoking tensions on all sides. I think Kronika is an interesting character, but it was such a mistake not having Raiden be the villain of 11. A corrupted Elder God trying to instill his version of peace is so much more interesting than a villain trying to reset time because reasons. They essentially had that with Superman in the Injustice games, though

A corrupted Elder God trying to instill his version of peace is so much more interesting than a villain trying to reset time because reasons. Honestly, since having two copies are possible it should have remained the same for Raiden as well. Having Earth’s heroes gravitate towards the non-corrupted Raiden could have set off the Shinnock- infused Raiden. Kronika being a shadowy figure setting everyone against each other would have made her more interesting, but have her plans unravel when she underestimates Dark-Raiden’s new power (maybe by having him swoop in to absorb the powers of Cetrion after you beat her with the crown). The goal then is to beat Dark-Raiden to the punch of stealing Kronika’s power to reset time the right way. I don’t know, a three way struggle for power (4 ways in Aftermath) just strikes me as more interesting.

They really should've taken the premise as a cue to do kind of a timeline mash-up dream match game of sorts instead of everyone being drawn from reboot!MK2-era. It makes things feel way more contrived and flat the way they did it, especially since no reason whatever is provided for why exactly this is Kronika's plan. And really with how many alternate costumes everyone has it probably wouldn't have even been particularly hard to accomplish in terms of development time; don't exactly think people would mind if instead of Random Tattoos Liu Kang you got his zombie model or something.

Capcom: “We’re gonna be releasing Street Fighter 6 next year” Bandai-Namco: “ Tekken 8 is in development.” NRS: “Ummm…so you guys like mobile games, right?”

I'm curious how much of MK's momentum seemingly deflating as of late is related to the WB/Discovery shenanigans, or just sort of the cycle of how Mortal Kombat tends to go. Not counting updates and rereleases, MK seems to go in 3-4 game cycles before momentum and interest (and also usually game quality) falls off, and then there's a dormant period before a comeback. That being said, I'd still put MK11 well above MK4 and MKA.

By accident or through guide books. Some of those fatalities were too complicated to be accidents, was there many guide books for arcade games or did magazines print them? Video game cheat code books were everywhere in the day.

I remember the first time seeing this at an arcade for a pizza place as a child. I remember wondering why the characters looked more "real" as opposed to how the Street Fighter characters did. Then when someone beat the game, it listed the actors who played the characters and it became apparent that this game used digitized actors and motion capture. Even as a little kid, I remember thinking Sonya was kind of hot (then MK3 came out and Kerri Hoskins took over the role and thinking she was hotter).
I remember wondering if the red stuff was blood and I was blown away. Then there was the pit level and seeing the bodies and severed heads at the bottom. That creeped me out a bit as child. I even wondered what Goro actually was.

I even wondered what Goro actually was. I was a little older than you so I was able to appreciate the beauty of the Sonya actresses. To be honest, while Haskins may be more of a traditional beauty, I was disappointed they didn’t stick with the original look as she struck me as more accurate to the “kicking men’s asses” aesthetic. Then again, the main competition at the time had petite (Chun-Li) and petite+waifish (Cammy), so maybe I just wanted something a little different in a female fighting game character design. Over the years games made a conscious effort to make the females look more formidable, so that’s good.

My goodness, this thread made me look up the name of the original Sonya actress, which led me to Kerri Hoskins Branson. She posted an IG photo of herself in her MK3 costume. If anything, she’s more of a smokeshow at 50 than she was back them.
