I mean the officially backstory (in kayfabe) was that it was created when the North American (real) and “ South American” (not real) titles were unified.

I remember Santino once said while he was champ that he was champion of all the continents making him the champion of Planet Earth.

I think it was Jericho who said the World Champion represents all continents at all times, regardless of where they are wrestling, whereas the Intercontinental Champion represents the particular continent they're wrestling in at that time. So if they're wrestling in Japan they are representing Asia. Wrestling in Germany they are representing Europe, etc.
I thought that was a cool way to look at it.

Don’t forget when DLo Brown held both the European and IC belts. Wwe magazine referred to him having both titles as Transcontinental champion while on air he was referred to as Eurocontinental Champion.

I always thought it as the Americas... which is why they introduced the European title as they were doing hot business in Europe.

I forgot who said it but I like the explanation that the Intercontinental title is for the continents whereas the world title covers the continents and the seas.

Forgot about Kurt calling him that and for not mentioning Jeff Jarrett (because he held both belts simultaneously too.) That quote in the tweet was from a 2000 episode of Raw and they didn’t mention Jeff because he worked for the competition at the time and there was bad blood between WWE and Jeff…yet they mentioned Bret Hart even though he was working for the competition and there was A LOT of bad blood between WWE & Bret.

I wonder if they just don't bring up Jarrett with it since he literally just gave Mark Henry the European title as payment for helping him out in the D'lo feud.

I never hated Jeff, but he became a midcard overachiever by the late 90's. At that point, if someone isn't going to break the glass ceiling and go to the next level, it feels redundant to see them win the same midcard titles over and over. It was cool to see him lose to Chyna though, despite the blackmail involved in getting him to job.

And then the real European title got unified with the IC title later on. So, maybe the IC title just represents the Americas and Europe, while Africa, Asia, and Oceania are reprented by the World/WWE/Universal titles?

Intercontinental championship doesn't represent the continents but the contenders, so the matches should be between wrestlers from different continents: Europe and Asia, for example, being represented by Gunther vs Jinder Mahal.
No?

As you can see, the IC Title represents Mr Burns' assistant. It's in it's early 40s, is unmarried, & currently resides in Springfield.
