I know most don’t like to remember Sable’s time as women’s champion, but something that does strike me in hindsight is how Luna and Jacqueline didn’t just work as ideal flood for her, they really were the only possible options. Obviously Sable needed tinge paired with opponents who could work on a level that would make up for her shortcomings in the ring, but also it needed to be with opponents who had recognition from fans to give Sable the rub. With the state of women’s wrestling at the time there were so few recognizable performers that had Luna or Jackie not been available or refused the only other alternatives would have been Sherri Martel or Madusa. Had that ended up the case, I could have seen either of them coming in to declare Sable an unworthy champion, seeking to regain the title they had once held so proudly. Goes without saying Madusa was almost certainly never going to happen thanks to the bad blood over her WCW debut, but does anyone know what Sherri was up to and any reason she wouldn’t have been available?

The idea of Sherri jobbing to Sable sickens me. Maybe it sickened her too.

Yeah, from everything I've ever read about Sherri, she seems a lot less likely to put up with the kind of stuff Luna did.

Late 80's-early 90's Sherri would've made a great opponent for Sable. However by 98 I don't know how ideal she would've been as she was in her early 40's by that point and had seldom wrestled the previous ten years as she had been almost exclusively used as a manager in WWF and WCW although she was very active and got bumped around a decent bit. Madusa wouldn't have been as effective as getting Sable over but I think she would've been able to have a better match with her as unlike Sherri she had been fairly active as a wrestler the previous four years.

Yeah, from everything I've ever read about Sherri, she seems a lot less likely to put up with the kind of stuff Luna did. On the wonderful World’s Greatest Wrestling Managers DVD, the impression given was Sherri was very respected in the locker room and also legit a pretty tough woman. So the exact polar opposite of Sable during that run, not sure it would have mixed well. Also, aside from the occasional match in WWF and WCW, Sherri hadn’t wrestled full-time since the late 80’s. That probably wouldn’t mesh well with Sable’s lack of skill either.
