So my brother and his wife are having a joint 40th birthday party with an 80’s theme.
While coming up with ideas for what I’m going to wear I thought of movies that came out in the 80’s. One I thought of is “Blade Runner” maybe I can go as a character from that one .. but then I thought .. yes that film came out in the 80s but it’s set in the future.
So I’m thinking my bro and sis in law are wanting to match the look of the 80s, and dressing as character from a 80s film set in another decade might not fit in with the theme. Blade Runner might be a bad example cause that’s what an 80s film would think what a bleak future would be like.
A better example… Amadeus.. a famous 80s film set in 18th Century Austria. Now dressing as a character from that film would not fit with the theme.. but it’s a famous 80’s film.
Another example if you go to a 70’s party and dressing as a character from Happy Days or Grease. Pop culture phenomenons but set in another decade. I think that would be fine but it would have to a very recognisable character like The Fonz or Sandy doing her bad girl look.
So anyway what do you think..?
Try and 100% match the look of the decade?
Or it’s OK to dress as something from another period of time as long as there is a clear pop cultural link to the decade ?

The idea is to reflect the decade, right?
Dress as Mozart and the first thought people woukd have looking at would be classical Mozart and not the 80s movie.
Dress like Dekker and the first thought people would have looking at you woukd be 'cyberpunk' and not the 80s movie.
Dress like Travolta from "Grease" and the first thought people would have looking at you would be a 50s greaser and not ... etc etc etc...
My opinion is stick with the decade.

Double denim and mullet at the ready, good sir. You’re going back in time.
A friend of mine tried doing your initial thought when his Mum held a ‘1920s’ themed party. Everybody else was aiming to go either gangster or flapper girl, and he was going to go as the robot from the film ‘Metropolis’ as it was made in the 20s.
He was soon talked out of it...

Yeah Doing research, for dressing as a character from the highest grossing movie from the decade will be hard for most decades cause they are rarely set in the present. Last decade: Avengers: Endgame (mostly set 5 years into the future, but came out in 2019 so ) 2000’s: Avatar (set far into the future) 1990’s: Titanic (set in the present but most of the movie is told in flashback) 1980’s: E.T (present all the way) 1970’s: Star Wars (set a long time ago) 1960’s: The Sound of Music (Set during WWII)

I have a costume ready.. Doc Martens, Levi Jeans, braces/suspenders, white wool shirt, some small badges of 80’s UK punk bands. Trying get a Mark E Smith from The Fall look. Well more like some who would listen to The Fall.

Bah, you should have been more out there with your "of the decade choice". You could have gone with this costume I did IN that decade!

If you want a movie costume from a character 'in the future' that is still unmistakably from the 80's and would be pretty recognisable to most people, go with Back to the Future 2.
