I wanted to write become a cringeworthy fad, but damn space limitations and all that.
I’m sure even breathing oxygen and drinking water to live will become cringeworthy fads at some point, but I mean more in terms of the foreseeable future. It seems like if recording live events that are being professionally recorded was going to stop or become universally acknowledged as cringeworthy it would’ve happened by now.

Only when something more convenient becomes available.
This isn't a culture thing, it's a tech thing, the second widely available convenient recording was out there it happened.
In the old days, there were fan cams of shows, but just the odd 1 or 2 because it was difficult. If phones were around in the 60s we'd have tons of blurry, rubbish sounding videos of the Beatles.

I hope so, if for no other reason (and there's more than one, trust) than, I'm short and it's hard enough to see in the crowd without people taller than me raising their arms and blocking the little hole of sight I found for myself with their arm and a glowing screen.
It's made being small and up close at shows akin to a boxing match: bobbing and weaving in my little area to try and see anything.

It feels like it gets outcasted more and more. Just yesterday my neighbours threw rocks at me from their bedroom window.

God I hope not.
I'm going to give a very specific example here. I'm a massive fan of Jim Steinman, and particularly his theatre work. We have precisely one audio recording of 'Neverland', his 1970s post-apocalyptic Peter Pan story that included the first use of the song Bat Out Of Hell, and it's missing half the second act because of a fault with the tape deck. But in 2017, an updated version of that musical became 'Bat Out Of Hell: The Musical', and because of people using their phones for bootlegs I can trace the changes from the first show through all of its runs, when songs were cut, when dialogue got changed, when they tried things out for opening night then backtracked, when cast changes led to different emphasis on lines. For a nerd like me, this kinda stuff is an absolute joy, a historical record that can be preserved, and wonderful memories to look back on.

As tech gets better it'll probably get worse because th footage is actually decent. But maybe Google glasses or an equivalent will take off and it'll be done on those. That's an even worse future.

I'm just glad the weren't a thing back in 1999. If they were, Owen Harts death would be all over the internet.

Interestingly, some events have incorporated “YONDR” technology where you put your cellphone in a pouch and can’t pull it out during the event in question.

Interestingly, some events have incorporated “YONDR” technology where you put your cellphone in a pouch and can’t pull it out during the event in question. I’ve seen a couple of standup shows with that policy in effect and I completely understand it. If you’re a comedian doing new material that hasn’t been released as an album yet, you absolutely don’t want it getting to YouTube.

Has anyone ever rewatched a concert recorded on their phone? I recorded a few bits to pop on facebook a few years back. Never rewatched them. At most, they serve as an "on this day" reminder. But even then i just think "that was fun" and not bother watching

unless every venue from now on starts doing full body strip searches before the show, probably not.

I used to bootleg the audio of a lot of gigs, but that was just a mini disc in my pocket recording and not holding it up in the air. I would pull my phone out to take a few pictures, just for records sake, cause lets face it, who keeps ticket stubs anymore.
There's a great pic of Freddie Mercury at live aid and there's not a single camera in the audience. Nowadays everyone would have a phone stuck in front of them.

It's as simple as people wanting a record of their fun moments. It won't stop for the same reason people won't stop taking videos of their vacations. Granted it's ridiculous to have your arm up the whole time and recording the entire show, but small snippets are fun for reliving the moment.

Without fan cam I wouldn't be able to watch when The Fink was CM Punk's personal ring announcer without the shitty commentary mocking him
