really wish they went back to the old derby format, with "outs" instead of the clock This format is better because you don't burn yourself out so much after the 1st round. Before in the past, all the great HR Derby performances in the 1st round were for naught cause they were totally gassed. With the clock, the players are able to pace themselves better. But how was that possible? With the "outs" you can take pitches without consequence. And take your time. They could also fix the rules and do culminative scores for all rounds.

Pete Alonso is gonna have "Elite in Chicago" heat when he steps up to the plate after Julio's round.

The clock I feel is better and adds to sense of urgency I honestly prefer the outs. I like the timeout splitting up the time, because if not guys get really gassed. But it was so much better TV when it's actually tracking the ball and not a swing before the previous ball does/does not get over the fence. I find myself watching more of the swing and launch angle/exit velo way more than the landing, and that was the whole point of this thing. To watch someone hit a ball that tries to leave the stadium ala Baltimore or Boston. Now I'd never see it live. That's the biggest downgrade to me.

I liked the old format as well, but I think the current one is better for keeping people/casuals' attention. It's more fast paced and has a greater sense of urgency. The issue, much like with everything they touch, is ESPN.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the majestic part of it but there is a lot of skill in being able to be consistent in hitting the ball for 3 mins It is putting on a show with shot after shot leaving the yard with fans turning their heads left and right watching them shits fly. You don't get to stare at it while it flys in the air but they are still hitting it far and hitting more Homeruns which is the selling point of the derby It is also in the slam dunk contest realm of you're not getting the top 10 best power hitters in the game doing it but you are getting talent. If you had Ohtani, Judge etc do it, of course they would want the 10 out to savor the moments. The rapid pace allows for no real downtime which I don't mind

I also prefer the current format to the last one where a lot of guys would just not swing at what they saw as bad balls. It took forever.

Funny to see the Marlins do halfway decent.
If they somehow win it all, what's the over under on cleaning house again?

Only one I disagree with is Bednar. The Reds have leaned very heavily on Diaz and he's been overpowering. Tied for the lead in the NL in saves, near the top in K/9, near the top in appearances, near the top in ERA. Bednar is amazing, but I think the body of work goes to Diaz.

I also prefer the current format to the last one where a lot of guys would just not swing at what they saw as bad balls. It took forever. The old Home Run Derby format was so tired. The addition of a timer absolutely added a sense of urgency to it. But the one rule change I don't like is that batters can swing at will, instead of waiting for the ball to land in the stands or drop into the field. One of the appeals of the Home Run Derby is the totality of the home run - the crack of the bat, watching the ball fly, and seeing how far from home it lands. Now, with how fast it goes by, split-screen viewing is necessary because by the time the ball lands off the first swing, the batter has probably gotten in two or three more hacks. You lose track of a) the home run itself and b) the score, because everything is going by too quickly.

Funny to see the Marlins do halfway decent. If they somehow win it all, what's the over under on cleaning house again? Considering they have no one they really paying money too on the team they should be fine for at least another 2 seasons since they want to actually compete now When they have to start paying people like Chisolm, Alcantarra and Arraez, we shall see

The season is pretty much done: Trout is out for a long while, and the team has collapsed into the All-Star Break. They aren't making the playoffs, and it's pretty much guaranteed that Shohei is leaving after the season. So might as well try to get as much in return for him as you can while you still have the chance. The Angels should try to get a "The Hershel Walker Trade" sized return for Ohtani.

Phillies win the All Star Game!! Well, they closed it out. But it was the Colorado Rockies (MVP Elias Diaz) who won the All Star Game if we are going by your metric.
