Yeah, I forgot Machado existed. Mainly because I hate his guts. But he does have an opt-out coming up. Tatis probably to a corner OF spot. Padres worse than the Dodgers with throwing this money around.

I’m not changing my tune from what I said in the summer.
Thanks for everything, Xander, but Red Sox fans need to temper the outrage about matching or exceeding an 11-year contract that would pay Bogaerts $25 million when he’s in his 40s. As much as Bogaerts has done for the franchise, it would’ve been foolish to even approach the offer he got from San Diego in years or total money.

Glad somebody took the Padres' money I said that to my dad this morning. I was like…who’s the jerk that’s gonna take one of the Padres stupid offers and run with it?

Padres worse than the Dodgers with throwing this money around. Xander is insurance just in case just like Story was with him Interesting to see what Correa gets as Twins have made serious offers to keep him but I wonder for how much. I would expect at least $200M but there was the rumor Tigers offered him around $300 last year and he didn't take it

As a Sox fan, I've loved Xander but there's no way in hell we should've matched that offer.

As a Sox fan, I've loved Xander but there's no way in hell we should've matched that offer. I don't blame them for not matching that but they must keep Devers. In the end, everyone knew Story was insurance and most likely replacement for Xander but you can't let Devers leave behind him next year

As much as Bogaerts has done for the franchise, it would’ve been foolish to even approach the offer he got from San Diego in years or total money. Still a big kick in the nuts especially hearing all day that Xander was in "heavy negotiations" with the Sox ownership. (BTW, F**k Jon Heyman!) That is now two homegrown superstars Chaim and Henry lost and given the contracts Judge and Xander signed there's no way Devers isn't testing the market next year. And I don't think Xander will be making $25 Million in his 40's. That contract is probably front loaded. Maybe 11/280 is too much but the Sox need to start spending. I'm all for financial responsibility but when you're a big market team you have to take some risks and overpay once in a while. It's hard to compete with the Yankees and Astros with a bunch of b level moves and hoping your minor leaguers pan out. And while I'm intrigued by the Masataka Yoshida signing I don't know how well he'll do in the states. Sigh, tomorrow would be a good day to leave the radio at home.

Tatis probably moves to LF with this move. Manny is definitely opting out with the money being thrown around now so Xander gives them some insurance in case he leaves. Tough for the Red Sox. Another core player gone. If Devers leaves too, then man, it’s going to get ugly in Boston.
I would be surprised if Correa ends up anywhere except the Giants now. Padres are out. Dodgers want to avoid the CBT threshold so they can reset the penalties and spend next winter. Yankees signed Judge. Maybe the Red Sox could sign him, which would make people forget about Xander but that doesn’t seem like something the current Sox front office would do.

They would have been dumb to match it. But it should never have gotten here. Sox ownership dicked around with *another* beloved home grown talent and now they're gone. It's a trend and a terrible one to boot. You're telling the fans that they shouldn't fall in love too much with home grown guys, because when it's time for them to get paid, to really get paid, they're out the door. Say what you will about the Judge contract, but the Yankees signed their guy who is going to be the face of the franchise for the next decade. The Sox don't care enough to do that. I shouldn't hate an ownership who brought 4 titles here, but they don't care nearly as much. The Sox are another portfolio item

It's a double win for San Diego because Tatis playing in LF means his body won't get as much wear and tear so he should hold up better.

Lol the poor Giants in the NL West. 😂 Don't feel bad man, you're getting ARSON JUDGE! Judge promised dude a paycheck to leak that tweet to pressure the Yanks to match. (Legitimately not bitter tho, I think it’s an awful contract) ((I’m still bitter about Harper tho. That one still hurts))

Now that the Winter Meetings have come and gone, let's assess the Red Sox maneuvers.
ACQUISITIONS
Pirates SS Hoy Park: acquired via trade for prospect Inmer Lobo
Mets RP Joely Rodriguez: 1-year deal worth $2 million
Dodgers RP Chris Martin: 2-year deal worth $17.5 million
Braves RP Kenley Jansen: 2-year deal worth $32 million
Japanese OF Masataka Yoshida: 5-year deal worth $105.4 million (once factoring in his posting fee)
DEPARTURES
1B Franchy Cordero: signed with Orioles
SS Xander Bogaerts: signed with Padres
SP Thad Ward: acquired in Rule-5 Draft by Nationals
Obviously there's a long way to go in the off-season, but as it stands now with the Winter Meetings in the rearview mirror, the 2023 Red Sox still lack starting-quality players at catcher, shortstop, left field, center field, and designated hitter, with only one starting rotation spot guaranteed for the start of the season (Nick Pivetta).

Lol the poor Giants in the NL West. 😂 If anything, I'm glad the Giants didn't get Judge because if history is any indication with how power hitters tend to decline, that contract in the back end could potentially get real ugly.

This is obviously not the finished product. They're committed to only $80.4 million in 2023, and the dreaded competitive balance tax threshold is likely to be in the area of $240 million, meaning they still have almost $160 million in spending money. Obviously, with the top-tier free agents having already signed, no one left on the market is going to command more than $25 million annually, so they can load up on that next tier of players and be a very competitive team in 2023. The question is whether they'll have the mettle to actually spend that money in free agency and the trade market, which, so far during the Bloom Era, they've proven very hesitant to do.

If the Giants can manage Nimmo and Correa, I’ll be okay.
We’ll end up with neither tho, and I’ll be salty.
