I said the following on Aug. 30, and not a word of it has changed with the news of the Yankees signing Aaron Judge to a nine-year, $360 million contract. I understand that Aaron Judge means more to the New York Yankees than dollars and cents. He's the torchbearer of the signature franchise in Major League Baseball, the heir apparent to legends like Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Mantle, Reggie, and Jeter. But he's also a colossal health risk entering his age-31 season starting the first year of a contract that will pay him $40 million annually until he's nearing 40 years old. This has the risk to mirror disastrous deals like Albert Pujols to the Angels (10 years, $240 million at age 32) and the Miguel Cabrera extension in Detroit (8 years, $248 million at age 31). The back end is gonna suck, but Judge is ACTUALLY 30 and not "31" or "32" which was probably really 34 and 35.

The back end is going to suck, but everyone knows that. You're paying for years 7-9 in order to take advantage of years 1-6.
Also it's almost inevitable that at least one free agent in the next five years is going to make both Judge's overall payment and AAV look affordable by comparison. Probably Ohtani.

Padre offered $400M over 10 years to Judge I thought the union could prevent you from taking that much less than someone else offered.

Padres did offer more overall, but I think both the Giants and Yankees offered more AAV. I don't think the MLBPA can outright block free agency signings so much as put pressure on players to get as much as possible. I think they can only get involved if a player signs for such a low amount that it looks suspicious.

Padre offered $400M over 10 years to Judge I thought the union could prevent you from taking that much less than someone else offered. Only in extreme circumstances in regards to differential. Like if Judge had a $400M deal and he accepted $80M they would been on his ass. Difference between $400 and $360 is “minimal” when he’s setting a record breaking contract

What makes you think you're going to get six elite years out of Aaron Judge in his early to mid 30s? As I've said, with Judge's injury history, body type, and playing style, there's no indication he'll have a late-career renaissance a la Edgar Martinez or Jose Bautista. He's much more likely to slowly fade from elite to good to average to barely rosterable, a la Pujols or Miggy. 'Moneyball' was kind of a boring movie, like everyone was on downers or something. I swear this isn't an insult, because I think it's one of the best baseball movies, but "Moneyball" is one of my favorite movies to take a nap to.

I mean, he was fit as a fiddle the past two years and his injuries were more bad luck that could happen to anyone than his body failing him.

California income taxes are also more than New York IIRC. So even if the Giants or Padres offered more money overall, it could be offset by taking taxes into the equation.
Granted, if it was that big a deal for every top free agent, the only teams signing them would be the Rangers, Astros, Rays, and Marlins.

'Moneyball' was kind of a boring movie, like everyone was on downers or something. It was a great book, a crazy influential idea, and a successful movie full of actors I like. Having said that, I'm bored to tears by that movie. You would have to pay me a decent amount of money to watch it again. I'd rather watch a screen saver or home menu for an hour and a half.

The back end of any of these mega deals usually suck. Such is the cost of keeping a superstar.

I love the movie. Although the family stuff can get a bit on my nerves, it's greatly acted and for BABIP's sake, it's a movie about a book about how a guy decided to look at actual data to improve something. The fact that it's interesting in the slightest is an achievement in and of itself!

hate to see Contreras go, hurts even more that its the damn Cardinals getting him!! But I guess after a decade of having a catcher that made Jason Kendall look like 2001 Barry Bonds stat comparison wise the cards finally want a catcher who can hit the ball with some kind of authority and whos WAR is finally better than Neifi Perez.
Curious where the cubs go from here, hopefully Correa, I will be disappointed with Swanson honestly. Cubs need a big bat in the line up and Correa is the best bet right now at that.
