I really hope they don’t go through with the 48 team idea. I know it gives a lot more countries a chance to qualify but a 32 team World Cup at times is a chore to get through. Plus if you’re letting every country in it starts to get a little less exclusive.
I’m sure countries like Italy & Scotland are happy about it though! And Oceania for sure deserves at least one guaranteed qualifier.

Europe are barely getting any more spots in the tournament, they’re only going from 13 teams to 16 teams, with no spot in the proposed playoff mini-tournament (at least until Europe hosts again).
Africa: 5 -> 9/10 Asia: 4/5 -> 8/9 Europe: 13 -> 16 Oceania: 0/1 -> 1/2 North America: 3/4 -> 6/7/8 (as host region, they’ll have two teams in the playoff) South America: 4/5 -> 6/7

Massive chance for African & Asian sides in particular. South America probably deserve more than the 4 places they had for this tournament (though Peru did lose in a playoff). 16 teams used to be the norm for the European Championships so I think 16 is a fair number.

Pretty sure 48 teams participating has never been in doubt, it’s the format of how they’re going to progress teams from groups to the knockout phase that is in question.

Yeah, the expansion is 100% confirmed. Going back on that now would likely see the continental governing bodies making legal challenges over the extra spots they'd stand to lose, which is a headache FIFA does not want.

Some may know that the current pope is from Argentina and he turned 86 on Saturday and was born in 1936. So that’s the first Argentinian pope who turned the age the same year that they last won, and was born in a year that matches the length of time it has been since they last won it. Anyway I checked twitter to see if there was anyone talking about it and it seems I’m not the only sad bastard out there who has too much time on their hands.

Amazing final Mbappe with an incredible goal but wasn’t enough. Never really been a Messi fan but he deserves his moment. Now onto USA, Mexico & Canada in 4 years. Hopefully, the US, Mexico, and Canada can qualify for their own house party. Most of the party is going to be held in the US house, and the party in the Mexican and Canadian houses will end well before the one in the US digs. One of them might get a quarter final, but as far as I'm concerned, this will be the second World Cup the US has hosted.
