My first experience of The Wonder Years was watching it on Nick At Night. Thought it was for kids.

Threes Company for sure. I would watch the reruns as a kid and liked it because of John Ritters physical comedy and the overall goofiness of the show. When I got a few years older, I watched it again and understood all the sexual innuendo and was like "My parents let me watch this when I was 7?" That is my answer but I saw it original run. Oddly IIRC it wasn't a show my parents really watched. But whenever it aired I would flip the channel to it. But would SNL count? First saw it in like 79 and after that would set the vcr to record it each week until 96ish...

I watched Ren & Stimpy when I was liiittle, like four years old. One of my first TV memories was the Nurse Stimpy episode. I suspect it fueled my interest in hurt/comfort stories now. Look back on it now, it's clear mom only left it on because she thought cartoons were always age appropriate lol

How has no one mentioned any of the shows from The Playboy Channel? Was it just me? I suppose I was also the only one watching Erotic Confessionals on Cinemax?

VH-1 back when they played nothing but music videos and the occasional Gallgher specials.

Johnny Carson.... I didn't always understand it, but I loved his monologues. I didn't always get to watch them because they were so late, but it was always fun when I did.

The most boring answer here, but I used to love watching stuff like 20/20 with my grandparents. I don't think I ever really thought it was for kids, I just liked visiting them and staying up late to watch those news magazine shows like that, which were often kind of creepy.

Looking back I really do not think Cow and Chicken was suppose to be for kids. Actual answer is unsolved mysteries in my house because that became family viewing. Guess I can thank Robert Stack and my mom for a lot of nightmares.

I started watching Mystery Science Theater 3000 when I was about 10 or 11 (Season 2 or 3). A lot of the jokes went over my head but the ones that I understood made m laugh harder than I'd eve laughed before.

At age 10 I eagerly anticipated new episodes of Dynasty every week.

I was OBSESSED with Star Trek as a kid, especially TOS and TNG, but they certainly weren’t kid shows. Then I watch DS9 in full years later and that one is certainly not for kids. It’s probably similar as Doctor Who, both old and new. They were marketed towards kids, but they could get pretty gritty with huge body counts. But they were prime family time shows growing up.

Doctor Who was gonna be my answer, the Tom Baker ones that would show up on PBS in the afternoons. I knew they were absolutely terrifying, but I also thought they were for kids. Some kids shows on PBS were pretty terrifying, too (goddamn Today's Special)

Rocko’s Modern Life was not quite the level of Ren and Stimpy, but had a ton of stuff get past the radar: Rocko working as a phone sex operator, being set up in a date with a sheep (and not an anthropomorphic one), and a board game called Spank the Monkey.
Super Dave Osborne seemed like a fun slapstick show, and the cartoon often ended with clips from his original live action show. Then years later, I find the full show complete with f-bombs and racist insults toward Fuji.

7YO Me: *Watching Cow and Chicken*
Mom: I think there's stuff on this show not for you.
7YO Me: What, no there's not!
Cow and Chicken: Here's an all woman butch biker gang that breaks into people's houses to eat their carpet.
