In the spad of 4 years, Dave names Bob Backlund the best wrestler alive, gives him the match of the year, buries him for being WWE champion, and finally deems him the most overrated wrestler.

Were the awards still a vote back then?
And also, a push that goes on a few years too long can do a lot to make a wrestler less appealing. And that wrestler likely got that push via talent in the first place.

My opinion often fluctuates more than that over 4 weeks.

Over 4 years, and the wrestling industry steadily growing and expanding, I can see why he soured on Backlund.

Dave himself has stated way back when that the early years of the awards are the result of thoughts from the 10 or so folks he'd trade tapes with.

Meltzer doesn't pick the winners. they are voted on by the public, which is why they always have contradictions. one the most common is a company simultaneously placing in both the "Best Promotion of the Year" and "Worst Promotion of the Year" categories

It does make sense. Bob had a great title run that just kept going and going and going and going as more over talent came in.
