OK, can I get a cliff's notes version of what is going on? I use Twitter sparingly, and mainly to follow certain wrestlers. Why do we think it is or isn't dying?

It's new territory, really: MySpace was supplanted by Facebook in a relatively smooth manner, but the core of the impacted userbase was a bunch of ancient Millenials (like me) - Twitter is the main platform that modern media elites and major figures have really gravitated to and legitimized, to the point that they take Twitter discourse and almost always elevate it far beyond what its actual statistical scope is. Like, reporters from the biggest newspapers, the biggest names in politics and entertainment, etc., Twitter is basically *the* platform for them, and there's no real "organic" transition to a new platform on the horizon. If Twitter was simply being supplanted by a new platform that did similar things ala how Facebook took MySpace's spot on the totem pole, that'd be one thing, but this is going to be kind of wild for awhile. You're right, and as someone who also qualifies as an ancient millennial, I agree that the Myspace->Facebook transition and even the bottom falling out of Tumblr isn't nearly the complete userbase upheaval Twitter exploding would be. (As an aside, I feel like I've never seen a consensus on where the actual transition between Gen X to Millennial is, though I feel like that's also because the claimed cutoff to be called a millennial keeps going earlier and earlier in time, seemingly. But that's another rant for another time.) It's weird, because I feel like Facebook had the same sort of clumsy transition to toxicity. I wouldn't say it started immediately after they opened it to more than just college kids, but arguably by the time it became overrun with Your Aunts That Inexplicably Like Minions ad nauseum.

You know, I hate to be grim, but right now, Elon Twitter’s dysfunctions are more or less an entertaining dumpster file, what with its lack of copyright enforcement and easy impersonations due to the $8 verifications. But I have a sinking feeling that it’s about to get worse; what if even worse stuff gets posted because they’re emboldened by the lawlessness we’re seeing? Beheading videos? Child exploitation?
I just have a bad feeling that while this is going to keep being a disaster, it’s about to become a lot less funny really fast.

Oh yeah, he immediately put the site on track to be the new 4chan and assuming it doesn't just collapse entirely that is absolutely what's going to happen.

That was very much a thing pre Musk Twitter and is even worse on things like TikTok. But if you dare speak out against it on those platforms prepare to either get showbanned or outright banned.

OK, can I get a cliff's notes version of what is going on? I use Twitter sparingly, and mainly to follow certain wrestlers. Why do we think it is or isn't dying? Elon Musk made a big show about buying Twitter to "restore free speech" and put a bid of $44 billion in to acquire the company (which was valued at $11 billion). Unsurprisingly, Twitter accepted and he tried to back out, forcing Twitter to threaten to drag him through the courts in order to get him to finalise the deal. Once in control he immediately laid off 3,700 of the 7,500 staff and shut down a number of core functions that he deemed unnecessary, such as advanced search options. Then he made the blue verification checkmark – previously only available to celebrities, politicians, and corporations who could verify their identities – available to anybody willing to pay $8 per month, with no verification required. Trolls immediately seized upon the opportunity to impersonate just about everybody of note, with one pharmaceutical company losing $30 billion on the stock market after a fake account announced they would be providing insulin for free. This led to advertisers and high profile users abandoning the site in droves. There is talk of lawsuits on the horizon. The remaining 3,700 employees were sent an email giving them the choice between committing to 80-100 hour weeks in order to make Twitter 2.0 happen or accepting three months severance pay with immediate effect. As many as 3,400 employees accepted the severance, with the majority of the 300 or so remaining reportedly being unable to quit due to Twitter being the employment sponsors, as they would face deportation without a new sponsor. Remaining employees were locked out of the office for most of the week while core site functions like two-step login verification and copyright IDs broke.

Still there despite more reasons to leave being made by the day. I have a Discord account up and a few other places as I start to move. Hearing okayish stuff about Hive so we'll see.

OK, can I get a cliff's notes version of what is going on? I use Twitter sparingly, and mainly to follow certain wrestlers. Why do we think it is or isn't dying? Let's see if I got this correct... Musk made an offer to buy Twitter because he said he wanted to keep the platform "free speech" and it had "extraordinary potential" he felt he could "unlock". Twitter accepted. Musk tried to back out by saying Twitter wasn't being forthright in the information being shared, on things like "number of bots" on the site. Twitter wouldn't let him out, sued. Musk agrees to buy before trial, takes over at end of October, fires a bunch of top executives. November 4th, Musk lays off a ton of the employees who look after debunking misinformation shared through Twitter. Musk introduces plan to charge uses $8/month for Twitter Blue Check Mark "Verified Status", which immediately leads to a metric crap-ton of phony accounts buying "Verified Status" and posting a metric crap-tons of... well, crap. A bunch of the accounts are "Verified" Elon Musk trolling accounts. (Side note: one of the phony accounts lead to pharma giant Ely Lily loosing a significant amount of money in stocks when it announced that Insulin would now be free)Musk pauses the "Verified Status" program. Company engineers and programmers start complaining publicly about Musk's changes. They get fired. Then more employees get fired for criticizing that move. Even more people who work at Twitter quit because of this, including security personal, engineers, programmers, content moderators, and advertising. Musk then sends out an email to remaining staff to commit to working long hours at high intensity or get three months pay as severance. Reports are that not a lot of employees agreed to this 'new deal' and instead are taking the severance. All the while, Musk has been on Twitter trying to defend his actions and is being trolled mercilessly.

OK, can I get a cliff's notes version of what is going on? I use Twitter sparingly, and mainly to follow certain wrestlers. Why do we think it is or isn't dying? The app is devolving solidly in the direction of 8chan because of Musk’s choices and advertisers, the primary source of income, has started jumping ship because very few corporations have the stomach to get associated with antisemitic and transphobic tweets. The only way it stays open is if Musk keeps throwing good money after bad.

Elon through a shitfit about activists ruining their advertisers perceptions... when one of the ad executives responded with a no... actually all of the information I stated above... Elon blocked him.

A lot of people are pushing Hive but I guess that's an app only thing and I still use my desktop for most everything, so it doesn't do me a lot of good, heh.
I do have Tumblr, instagram, and may start using Discord more if twitter does go away though.

There's no desktop/website version for Hive yet, which is a bit of a downer. But, I imagine they'll add that eventually.

Given the very public animosity between Musk and his trans child, this looks like a particularly targeted, vindictive, personal move on his part. I think half the reason he bought Twitter is to let people call his daughter and Chelsea Manning the t-slur

Gonna go ahead and guess that has a *lot* to do with how a given person decides to define “child exploitation”, given the awful discourse that’s attacked things like drag shows in recent times.
