That's how I look at it, he was one part of it, but his partner, the actors, the direction, so many people made that show great, he won't get the satisfaction of ruining it. This is pretty much exactly how I feel towards both Linehan's shows and Harry Potter. I'm not going to give JKR the satisfaction of taking away the memories, nostalgia, and magic (pun intended) just because she wound up being as much of a twat as Linehan. Jk to me is a slightly different case as it's so much her vision, I try to avoid anything that'll give her money, but there's lots to enjoy that circumvents that, 2nd hand stuff, libraries, fanfic and supporting the cast and other creatives in their work.

It's generally pretty easy for me to separate the art from the artist, especially when the "artist" isn't a sex criminal or murderer or something and is instead just some dude who completely lost his mind 25 years later. Happens not infrequently really. Sometimes people just spontaneously become witless. Ted remains a funny show. I'll just pretend Linehan doesn't exist until the next time one of his weird Mrs Doubtfire schemes blows up in his face.

So I didn't know the writer was transphobic until I made this thread. This is kinda awkward. Yeah, it's unfortunate. His wife eventually left him because of how he basically made it is whole life, obsessively going on about it and hanging out with professional transphobes, and antagonizing people until it eventually got him banned from Twitter and a few other places. Naturally, he may get unbanned. I do know most of the people who have worked with him have distanced themselves from him, it seems. Still, it's kind of ludicrous how none of this ever really had to happen if he wasn't so obsessive about it.

What gets me about Glinner is that you'd have thought his wife leaving him and his career being in tatters would be cause to stop and look at how badly he's torpedoed his own life and maybe examine some of his decisions, but instead he's just doubled down on this ridiculous shit and made it worse. It's at the point where you don't even pity him anymore because his views and behaviour are so reprehensible.

You can see how some people fall down the rabbit hole, they're in a bad place, these groups give them a feeling of meaning and power, and then it becomes a sunk cost. But his guy had a life and was wildly successful for a couple of decades!

I’m not excusing for one second anything Linehan said or believes but something just seemed to snap with him one day. Before all the transphobic shit started to come out I liked a lot of stuff he did (not just the comedy he wrote). I liked how he went after a load of misogynists over the whole GamerGate thing and he genuinely seemed to be a big advocate for feminism. (There could have been tweets similar to those that would come later but I don’t remember any and the fact that his account is gone means I can’t check). And then he wrote an article about how his wife and he had to terminate a pregnancy for health reasons and he got a barrage of hateful comments from certain places online and he seemed to change overnight. Gone was the guy who posted some hilarious stuff on Twitter and was replaced by the man we know him as today. I’m not saying he wasn’t transphobic before but the change in his online demeanour happened almost instantly and it could have been one little remark from someone criticising that episode of The IT Crowd and he then decided that the Trans community was his new enemy. There’s an episode of Richard Herring’s Leicester Square Podcast that’s is absolutely brilliant. It’s him and Armando Ianucci on there and it’s so strange to hear Linehan laughing himself silly, telling great stories and seemingly having a blast for 90 minutes and then compare it to how he is now. Again, I’m not trying to excuse his comments, nor do I even think if he did have some sort of reaction to an event that it somehow justified any further comments he made. But the change in personality was so drastic, it’s bizarre. Regardless, he still chose to double down on his hatred and it cost him his marriage and his career.

What also sucks is that Lineham might have one of the most memorable lines in the series.
He is the one that shouts that random “f***ING HELL” during the King of the Sheep show.

Caught a video of Linehan ranting on Graham Norton's recent comments about talking to trans people about trans issues and it was notable in that Glinner has somehow managed to grow more deranged since being exiled to the post-relevance wilderness. It's tragic more than anything at this rate.

I rewound that several times when I first heard it. It just came out of nowhere. I didn’t know he said it. I sort of wish I’d not found it out.
