Wrestling Observer Newsletter says that when AEW brought Ace Steel back he was given “back pay from the time he was let go, as a concession to [CM] Punk when he agreed to come back.” Fightful’s report last week on Steel’s return also mentioned they’d heard he was paid for the time between his firing and re-hiring.

Paul Wight, who has known Punk since long before the company's inception, recently explained the reason behind the issues between the Straight Edge Star and others in the locker room. The former WWE star was asked what CM Punk brings to the table in an interview with DAZN. Wight gave a one-word answer to the question, before detailing how Punk's personality is a cause for communications breakdown:

"Star power. A lot of people may not like Phil's attitude. Phil, I've known Phill for a long time. We've been friends for a long time. Phil is super competitive and super driven. He expects a lot from himself, and he expects a lot from others around him. I think a lot in the beginning here is I think there's just a communication breakdown that people might not understand how passionate Phil is.

Phil is...he's a guy that's gonna let you know if he's upset about something and he's not gonna really give a crap if he hurts your feelings. He's never been that way with me. If I've screwed up and done something, he's letting me know right away what was I thinking? And it goes back and forth."

The former Big Show mentioned how he has the same no-nonsense attitude but less intensity than CM Punk. Discussing the way out of this problem between the two parties, Paul Wight said that everyone has to learn to communicate their feelings:

"I kind of have the same attitude, not quite as intense as Phil's but mine is...It's very business oriented. What's best for the program what's best for the overall show. A lot of times in a business when you have this many incredible talents with this many egos, feathers are gonna get rubbed the wrong way.

There's gonna be conflict. It's not romper room. This is a serious business with serious athletes. Everyone has to learn to communicate their passion in different ways. but the one thing that unequivocally nobody can deny is CM Punk brings star power. "

Speaking with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, Punk, a known Chicago Blackhawks fan, was asked to name the Conor Bedard of the AEW locker room. Bedard, the top pick in the NHL Draft, is viewed a potential cornerstone of the franchise. Punk pointed to Allin and praised the former TNT Champion.

“It’s Darby Allin,” says Punk. “He’s still fairly young, and he always makes chicken salad out of chicken sh--. He’s got that ‘It Factor’, and he’s really getting comfortable. We had a whole big promo segment a few weeks ago [on Collision], and I thought he shined. That made me super proud. If you want to be a locker room leader, you need to know how to speak to people. It's not just about seniority and having the right ideas, it's people skills and being inspiring. If you don't have those, you get a toxic locker room. I don't doubt that a lot of the time Punk's heart is in the right place, but does that matter when half the roster doesn't want to be on your show and you ban several others?
