Kind of crazy how poetic of an ending it is if this is it. The Joe match in wembley but also the top honor induction in the Cauliflower Alley Club.
Phil was a product of the backstage culture in the indies and wrestling of his time. Dude idolized the oldies. He bought into the whole “respect” thing, for better and for worse. A lot changed in between Punk leaving WWE and Punk returning AEW. Wrestling changed, the audiences changed, the culture, everything. He didn’t. He expected that “respect” back from the young wrestlers across the board and he didn’t get it. Other vets have mentioned how the new generation doesn’t come up for advice as much. The Elite were never the type to throw their power and ego around, Jericho dealt with it throughout his career, and Mox seems about chill to the bone with that kind of stuff. Not Phil.
So he goes out on his storied rivalry and gets the respect of his peers and older vets. He’s stuck out of time.

I feel for Tony Khan. All In was probably the biggest night in the young history of the company. 80,000 + in another country crowding to see your show and filling up a stadium and you had to deal with a 44 year old narcissist physically assaulting people and ruining what should be the most important night of his career as a promoter. Given how long it can take for me to mentally recover from being berated, not even threatened with assault, just aggressively verbally assaulted, by rude guests at work, I can't even begin to imagine how long it took Tony to stabilize after Punk's bullshit that led to him legitimately fearing for his life. Dude was probably out of it the entire show of All In. I would not remotely be shocked to hear the show being basically ran on autopilot by the producers for each match. Doubt it, Khan was out for his post show goodbye as usual

Yeah it is sometimes easy to forget that Punk was from the era of "respect is king" and "wrestlers' court" and all that BS. He's a relic of a bygone era and mostly sat out the locker room transition into that of gamers and stoners just chilling around. At the same time he's a great case study into why it was absolutely such a good thing such behavior has (mostly) been weeded out of wrestling.

Kinda crazy to see how some guys like CM Punk took that culture and then how others like Edge and Christian took to it, and opted to go "Hey when we're the aging vets, let's NOT do that".

Punk's generation (WWE and independents) include Cena, Batista, Orton, Danielson, Joe, Styles and a bunch of other guys from the early days of ROH and TNA. They all turned out fine. The hell happened to Punk?
