Watched this last night with the spouse on its first day on Netflix, and…wow. Wow. Just an amazing, touching, poignant movie, the most a movie has made me feel in years. I laughed, and also got teary at multiple points. And the sheer craft and ambition and meticulousness it took to make the stop-motion animation work (and it did) means del Toro has earned my absolute, eternal respect. 5 out of 5 stars. See this movie. That is all. www.netflix.com/title/80218455

I'm really not interested unless it has Roberto Benigni playing the part of Pinocchio.

I saw this thread and wondered “Was this the crappy Disney remake or that crappy Pauley Shore version?” and then realized it was neither. Why in the world has Pinocchio of all things become so popular this year?

Why in the world has Pinocchio of all things become so popular this year? The timing of this one is more or less a coincidence; it’s been a longtime passion project of del Toro’s which has been languishing in development hell for over a decade and almost cancelled, until it finally got a new lease on life several years ago. And it’s totally worth it.

Loved this film. It is one of my favorite movies of the year so far.

And it’s totally worth it. I see. Makes me wonder if Disney chose to put out a remake the same year to try and cut it off ahead of time, though considering how hard they screwed theirs up I imagine this newest one will be the one people remember fondly in the future judging by the reactions I’ve seen so far. Not that it would take much effort to be better than either of the other two…

It is an interesting range of Pinnocchio releases to have the artistic passion project, the soulless Disney remake, and the so bad its good Lionsgate adaptation all within the same year.

In fact, aside from the Disney one, Tom Kenny is in damn near every Pinocchio movie coming out lately. ![](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FjxfPd5X0AEyARd?format=jpg&name=small)
