God of War Live-Action Series Officially Announced for Prime Video

Prime Video has announced that it will officially order a God of War live-action series, in co-production with Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions.

Amazon’s Prime Video service says that the live-action series will be an adaptation of the Santa Monica Studios sequel series, following Kratos in the Norse realm of Midgard following his quest for vengeance in ancient Greece.

Like in the game, the series will follow Kratos as he journeys with his son to the highest peak as a final request from his late wife.

It was reported earlier this year that Prime Video was in talks with PlayStation on a potential live-action series, but today's direct-to-order announcement confirms Prime Video is serious about the adaptation.

The Wheel of Time’s Rafe Judkins will serve as showrunner and executive producer, while Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, who’s worked on Iron Man and Children of Men, have boarded the series as writers and executive producers. Cory Barlog will also serve as executive producer.

“The God of War is a compelling, character-driven franchise that we believe will captivate our global customers as much with its expansive and immersive worlds as its rich storytelling,” says Amazon Studios' head of global television Vernon Sanders.

“We are so proud and excited to be working with our friends at Amazon Studios and our partners at PlayStation Productions to adapt this beautiful and heartbreaking game into a premium live-action series,” adds Sony Pictures Television Studios president Katherine Pope.

God of War was released in 2018 to critical-acclaim. The sequel, God of War: Ragnarok, was released in 2022 and was a top contender in several Game of the Year lists and categories. You can read IGN’s God of War: Ragnarok review here.

Prime Video isn’t just adapting God of War either. The Westworld creators are busy working on a live-action Fallout series for the company and released the first image of the series recently.

And the fans are solidly behind him.

The big question mark is whether he can physically pull it off. The dude's 58, had both hips replaced, a knee replacement, and has a metal rod in his back. Obviously stunt actors will handle most of the action scenes regardless of who is in the role, but with that kind of wear and tear it's an extra insurance hurdle Amazon would have to jump through.

Yeah, like he can def do it if all things right but he has a lot of wear and tear on his body. It will be interesting to see who else shows up and wants the job of Kratos. If he doesn't get it, he will most likely get a role somewhere like how they are doing Baker and Johnson in Last of Us TV series

I figure the latter is most likely. I love the guy, but even ignoring his health issues, from a marketing standpoint they'll probably want a bigger name than a guy who was on a reasonably popular sci-fi show 20 years ago... especially when someone like Henry Cavill's schedule just opened way the hell up.

Everyone and their mother who is bald headed (or willing to shave it bald) and has a beard will be coming for that spot. You just know Rock name is going be attached to this at some point 

Speaking of Cavill, he did say like a year ago he'd want to a Red Dead Redemption TV or Movie adaption and yeah him playing Jack or Arthur would work

Amazon are also actively developing something with Stargate, so it's possible Judge will be involved in that in some form.

As for Cavill, it's safe to say if there's a big budget video game adaptation being made he'll definitely listen to pitches, the huge video game nerd that he is. He teased involvement in the Mass Effect series as well.

Being based on the sequel series by default means I'm not interested. Really just never had it at all in me to care about taking what was a fun, stupid hack-and-slash series and turning it into a meandering self-important chore.

Though I'm guessing this will be like the movie adaptation back in the day and never actually go anywhere.

Do Season 1 from the reboot duology. Ends with the beginning of Fimbulwinter. Then you do 2 flashback seasons of Kratos becoming the God of War and killing the Greek pantheon. Seasons 4 and 5 you do the second game from the reboot duology.

Cast a younger kid to play Atreus for Season 1 so that by the time Seasons 4 and 5 roll around, the kid will be the appropriate age for Seasons 4 and 5.

Easy peasy.
